Well if its going down the centre pipe its just overflowing which is doing nothing other than move the wort around

I thought it was to filter threw grains and not down pipe

Better off doing what a lot of brewers do get rid of the overflow pipe and just have a more fluid mash. The only caution is to keep an eye on the level when using a lot of oats.
