Hiya Moley and thanks for your replies.

I guess that the addition of the campden tablet is a habit from my country wines that I make. My problem is that I see bacteria and germs on everything from the spoon to the bung :D

Again, thanks for your reply. In future when I make something from supermarket bought juices I'll set it a-running straight away. :thumb:

:oops: My apologies, I saw “new member starting a first Wurzel's” and jumped straight to “numpty with no previous experience”. I hope it's an excusable mistake as we get quite a few who start off with juice wines and then graduate to country wines.

mines fermented right out to 990 gonna rack it off later and add a half a ct and some pottasium sorbate then let it clear

how long will it take to clear on its own or shall i add finnings to make it faster
 
I have found that it doesn't seem to clear on its own in this warm weather and I don't have a cool place in the house to put it.

I leave it about a week after degassing to settle as much as possible then add finings, drops clear in about another 3 days this way.
 
I agree with Sam, it can take a while to clear and I always use finings. It should drop clear within a couple of days but I always give it at least a week for the sediment to compact a little.

Why half a CT ? :wha:

I would class rocket fuel as 1.130+ :drunk:

maybe to you but to me i would class it as rocket fuel as ive never really drank much above 5% ie beer and cider

will be fun to taste them when its ready tho

one more question

ive made my own dj from them 5 litre water bottles i drilled 8 mm holes do you seal round the airlock or leave it

1.110 is rocket fuel for me too.

If you drill a circle of tiny holes and cut out the middle you can force a standard bung in for an airlock in the top. The pressure is higher inside while the Co2 bubbles are coming out so no air etc can get in.

If you do want to seal it tight you can use cling film or plumbers PFT tape round the threads.
 
I just drill an 8 or 9mm hole in the cap and push an airlock into that, there's quite enough flexibility in the plastic to make a proper seal.

Some people drill 12mm holes, buy grommets from the HBS and then complain that they don't seal.
 
ok i will put 1 in i thought it may be too much for a dj

ive got it to seal now put some electrical tape round the airlock and its sealed now

will leave it for now and rack it off tomorow
 
This recipie is quite similar to the fruit juice punch base that I used to make almost 30 years ago but with the addition of the tanin and the glycerine it should be a bit less bland and have a bit more body.
Looking at the rave reviews i thought I'd give it a trial gallon and then i worked out some prices and thought it's hardly worth making the mess for one gallon - so I've just put on a "trial batch" of five gallons.

Wish me luck 'cause I fear this may be a slippery slope.
 
ive just started another wow this one is done witha red grape juice tho will that make it a rose
 
well its cleared so it bottled and im having a taste

my question does this get better with age
