still think robbies is dishwater in comparison to marble ale though

It depends where you drink it, if you go into Stockport and Drink it near the brewery its Nectar, I was brought up on Robbies, my old man had a Robbies pub.

It doesn't travel well, & they used to do a Bitter and a Best Bitter, the Bitters Crap the Best Bitter was heaven, it got a bad name as most landlords used to sell the Bitter as Best Bitter, & if it was me I would go for a Pint of Robbies Best in a Pub where they know how to look after it over anything I have drank by Marble any day, the problem is Finding a pub where it is spot on, but they do exist :) you just have to be in the Know.

Shane

I too was brought up on Robbies and when it is kept well it is a good pint, certainly what I drank in the Castle on Oldham street was nectar, and what was served at Marbles 57 Thomas street was tosh. I can't understand why they would serve it gravity feed it was ***** did no favours to the beer. Mind you 57 Thomas street is rather pretentious the only good thing in there was the cheese selection but I was out to drink beer not eat cheese, and anyway i had just had a fantastic £3 curry across the street.

i shall defere to gray and shanes more comprehensive knowledge of robinsons ;)

mind you robbies are a country mile better than lees and holts(although i used to be partial to the odd pint of hydes jeckyls gold)

and every one of thems better than cains

Critch we don't mention Lees or hydes here in Manchester :nono: :nono:

And yes and what i remeber of Cains from 20+ yrs ago  and the least said about Higgsons the better as well. Mind you i do have fond memories of drinking Walkers Winter Warmer in the Willowpool on Smithdown road as a student. :thumb: :thumb:

The Higsons stout with Peppercorns I tried at Waterloo Beer Festival was Fantastic, very unusual played with the mind but a fantastic drink. :drink:

I haven't been on here much recently as I've fallen off the brewing wagon..for now.

However last week I was in Manchester and managed to get to the following bars:

Brew Dog - Great! I love their beers and loved the bar.
Port Street Beer House - Absolutely amazing place. Reasonable prices, lots and lots of choice.
Several Wetherspoons - As usual, cheap and had a few decent beers on, especially The Waterhouse.

I walked passed The Angel and The Grey Horse every day several times, but didn't manage to make it in either for a pint unfortunately.

Thanks for the tips people, hopefully I'll make it back to the Port Street bar sometime, it really was good in there.

it was a lovely trad beer, sessionable, hoppy and bitter, i shudder at what is to become of it.

sadly no longer made by us as a group of london and scotish based suits have much more expensive lawyers than us :(

Sorry to here that Critch.

I was referring to my experiences of it in the late 1980's when i was a student in Liverpool. It was most certainly the worst of a bad crop. Tetleys was marginally better and Walkers was probably better though I do remember they did serve a good pint of Boddingtons in The Oxford, by the university with very good lock ins on a wednesday night.

The least said about Cains the better.
