I'm off on a course for work in January for a week. The course is likely to be very very brain intensive, so I don't want too much of a fuzzy head, but I'd still like to check out any decent real ale pubs in central Manchester. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Grey Horse near China town is good.

Very small but have some good real ales on

I was in Manchester at the weekend for the Xfactor finals, I really wanted to go into the Brewdog bar but didn't have time :(

Spanking! I've never made it to a brewdog bar, but now it looks like I'll get more than enough chance.

Cheers for the tip of the Grey Horse too, I'll check that out.

For me it HAS to be the Port Street Beer House in the Northern Quarter. Probably the best array of beers I've ever seen in a pub

The excellent robinsons pub The Castle on Oldham street in the Northern Quarter is a good one, The Marble Arch, Port Street Beer House has a fantastic selection of beers as well.

If I had a pass for next week thats were i would be heading. :thumb:

Mmmmm. A shop down here was selling Marble "Dobber" a while back and they had it at our local CAMRA beer fest too. Cracking pint that was. I could inhale several pints of that right now! :drink:

I went out last christmas and enjoyed my pint of Robbies Black beauty hand pulled stout in the castle far more than the gravity served tripe from Marble served at their Thomas street establishment. It was flat lifeless and frankly too cold.

Put me off their beers.

Kings head... actually in salford but right next to the city centre. Get to Salford Central train station and have your back facing the filing cabinet (Manchester Justice Courts) head straoght across the main road (passed the salford arms on your right - not the greatest pub) and its about 100 yards on your left hand side.
Was a great pub last time i went in (around 2 years ago) selling a few good real ales... has a 70s tech geek theme going on!

Failing that jump on a train into Bolton and there are a few dotted around. One nearly opposite the train station called the Sween Green!

Also in Salford, about a 25 minute walk from the Northern quarter (stayed there last Tuesday night) you have the New Oxford. Alway got at least 6 constantly changing ales from locale breweries as well as a great selection of continental bottled beers (Kriek etc.)
Enjoyed my visit Tuesday evening.

Probably the pint that I had but certainly had no life and as a result no aroma or flavour. The hand pulled stout was very good perhaps the fact it was hand pulled swayed me. :thumb:

Found a great pub that had a few guest ales at the Crown & Kettle pub opposite the Frog & Bucket Comedy club on Gt Ancoates St. The comedy club is worth a visit as well. Having said all that it was about 3 years since I was in there, but the beer was very nice.

Edit: Just found a review page: HERE

It depends where you drink it, if you go into Stockport and Drink it near the brewery its Nectar, I was brought up on Robbies, my old man had a Robbies pub.

It doesn't travel well, & they used to do a Bitter and a Best Bitter, the Bitters Crap the Best Bitter was heaven, it got a bad name as most landlords used to sell the Bitter as Best Bitter, & if it was me I would go for a Pint of Robbies Best in a Pub where they know how to look after it over anything I have drank by Marble any day, the problem is Finding a pub where it is spot on, but they do exist :) you just have to be in the Know.
