I am going on holiday for a fortnight on Wednesday and I ordered a Razorback IPA kit which I intended to put on last week and leave in the FV until I came home.

Unfortunately I was sent the wrong kit so the RIPA is likely to arrive tomorrow. I’d like to still pop it on before Wednesday but I can see you have to add the hop pellets after 5 days. Anyone done this kit and can suggest a work around?

Also the kit I was sent in error was a Woodforde’s Sundew, was tempted to keep it but the reviews are so poor I am going to send it back. Good move or not?

Thanks for any advice.

I have brewed the Razorback IPA, I normally find the festival kits take longer to ferment than the instructions say (typically I leave it in the FV for 2 weeks) so I tend to put the hop pellets in later than the 5 days suggested anyway and have never had an issue, got to say I loved this kit. My suggestion would be to do the kit, leave to ferment while on holiday, tranfer to another fermenter (if you have one) add the hops and leave for the requiered time then keg/bottle.

Returned, bottled it and had an early bottle after it had ‘conditioned’ for ten days in a hot shed.

Bloody fantastic best kit I have made. A very happy man and I am likely to put another on without delay.

It's good isn't it. Got one on draught at the moment.

I know you've already done it but I always let mine ferment right out before dry hopping. Typically set it off, leave it two weeks, then dry hop for 2-3 days, cold crash and keg / bottle.

Good to have this recommendation. I have a kit sitting in its box. I intended to make a couple of kits but got sidetracked into all grain after making the first kit ;-). Razorback will be a good September brew methinks...

I think I will be putting another one on soon as this lot won’t last long at this rate so I’ll follow your tip next time Graz.

Good advice from Davemc some kits are hardy enough to fermenta little longer, I doubt it would make much difference.

Stocks are low so I started the Razorback IPA kit off last night.

My experience of the Festival Landlord kit is that dry hopping after 7 days and fermenting for another 7 (yes, these kits take a while to ferment) gives a refreshing beer for warm summer evenings but there is a quite harsh bitterness that never fades with age.

Expecting the Razorback to be even more hop forward I am considering making up a hop tea at 70°C with 40% of hops and adding to FV just after high krausen and the other 60% as dry hop when fermentation has finished so I can leave in the FV for only 3 days. This is in hope of smoothing out the sharpness a little.

Would this work?
