Well I wouldn't use Java at all but The Lad is set on it.

Yes, unfortunately it seems to be very popular nowadays despite the host of problems it can throw up. I have to support one customer who has legacy software written in Java and it's a right PITA. With the advent of Win7 and now Win8, I am slowly replacing their set of applications with C based ones because the cost of maintaining compatibility by reworking their Java code is not feasible

We have Eclipse on Windows so may as well stick with it on Linux.

Despite my dislike of Java, Eclipse is mostly written in Java and is pretty good - certainly it works better on Linux.
