English Electric Lightening, after I'd built heaven only knows how many Spitfire variants, Hurricanes, Mosquitoes and Lancaster airfix kits it was the one I had to have.

While I've no idea if the tales I've read are true or not they are good tales, and ought to be true :) When the Yanks first had the F15, they believed it was the dog's danglies, and having brought it to the UK challenged the RAF to a race, 15,000 feet and back, one of the Lightening squadrons took them up on it, and won :) Allegedly the Lightening was stripped to the airframe, but I doubt the yanks put a standard F15 into the race.

In typical RAF fashion a Harrier squadron laid down the same challenge, but, somehow, had the starting point set at the hangers.... You'd think pilots would be able to work that one out in advance, but the tale goes the Lightening bods fell for it, Harrier becoming the fastest aircraft to 15,00 feet :)
