Not going BB but looks like a great line up  I should be at RIAT as usual.
Just read on that link about the Vulcan.......gutted...for me the highlight of any show it's flying in :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(
I thought they didn't have any 'spare' engines...that was when I last looked at the VTS..which was a while ago :hmm:
Have a great day out, hope the weather's good for you :thumb:

I remember being on top of the Wizard Alderley Edge and looking out and seeing the last two Vulcans to fly landing for the last time at Woodford. Good to see that one is flying again.

Growing up as a kid I used to enjoy the manchester airshow as all the aircraft flew over our house during the display

When I was a snotty nosed air cadet in the mid 70's I went on a camp at RAF Swinderby and we did some flying experience at Waddington. I remember waiting to climb into a Chipmunk on the grass 50ft away from the nain runway and watching a Canadian pilot on the last day of an exchange tour take off and throw a Vulcan about for half an hour as if it was a single seater. A great day and there was only about 20 of us watching :D

Barton airshow and Woodford...that takes me back. I think the Vulcan did it's last display at Barton...though that could be wrong, might just have been the last year on the circuit.
Just seen the B2 bomber confirmed for RIAT as a static  ...saw it flying at the Chicago airshow a long time back....awesome

I remember 2 lightnings flying over the house for the manchester airshow that was spectacular they where low over the houses. Also once sailing at Gt Budworth and the Memorial flight fly over. Those were the days.

Always a subject for disagreement in our house, which was louder Vulcan or Lightning (Harrier close)....I say Lightening...saw it at Barton......good god it was loud

It's got to be the lightning for me, I saw one at Cosford in the late 60's. It was in the days before 'elf an safety' and it came straight at the crowd, stood on it's ar*e and went ballistic. The noise was incredible and there was dust and debris flying everywhere for ages afterwards. My dad said I had a massive smile on my face for days. I've loved the lightning ever since. :D

I have to agree with you it was bloody loud.

When I worked on a fish farm on the west coast of scotland in the early 90's we used to get used as target practice, well they didn't actually drop anything on us but they would certainly buzz the salmon cages. We could tell that they were getting ready for the first gulf war as the planes changed colour over night

I hope the weather's better than this for you BB... fingers crossed. Just had a look at the 10 day forecast for RIAT...hope it changes  ...last few years rain ti'll noonish then clearish, last year we spent 4 hours in a tent it was awful

On the subject of loud...that ruddy Raptor...that's something else...easily give the lightening a run for it's money. The take off at Riat was amazing, see it here...the way that plane flies is unbelievable. I hope the Mig 29's are going to do the cobra  this year

As far as noise factor goes, i would say the Vulcan must be the winner. I saw and heard lots of Lightnings on the Fylde coast in the sixties flying from Warton. As a spotty ATC cadet in the early sixties I witnessed a QRA scramble of 3 Vulcans. Various air shows since that time have supported my first impressions. Perhaps there is an ex RAf type who could give a definitive answer. Amyway, wish I was at Waddington tomorrow, have a bludy good day!

They have a big free air show on Southend sea front every year, love it when the harriers do their thing, awesome, don't know why they are being pensioned off, no other plane can do what they do.

would love to go to this. With Most of my family being in the Navy i regularly saw air shows at Culdrose as a kid. Can still hear the jets taking off now.

Because the yanks think they can do it better (F35) and we don't have the cash

I have to agree that the Vulcan was louder. The Lightning engines although monstrously powerful would have to be twice as loud and are probably not that far off. I never worked on any 'fast' jets during my time (only Nimrods) but worked with guys who had worked on both Lightnings and Vulcans.
I spent the majority of my time on helicopters - Pumas and Chinooks.

Regarding the Harrier.
We left a gate guardian in Belize back in '95 which has faded in the sun a bit but is surprisingly still complete.
I have some photos somewhere of us lifting it into place.
They were bloody noisy things though and pretty much all that could be heard at Gütersloh in the 80's.
