My father died rather suddenly on the 2nd October last year. He made a cup of tea in the morning, took it back to his bedroom, sat on the bed and died. We didn’t even know anything was wrong with him. Whilst it was nice to know he didn’t suffer, he was taken from us far too early and we never got the chance to say goodbye.

Next Thursday will be the first anniversary of his passing and I want to brew something of my own that would have done him proud. This is R.I.P.

23L, 60% brewhouse efficiency;

6.4Kg Pale Malt
300g Crystal
40g Roast Barley
30g Chocolate Malt

90 min mash & 90 min boil

50g Challenger (6.1%) 90 mins
45 g Goldings (5%) 90 mins
140g Treacle (20 mins)
40g Hallertauer 15mins

Beersmith predicts OG 1059, 39IBU

I was after a deep red, winter type ale. I’m only using the treacle as I have some left over from the stout I made recently - if those more experienced see any obvious mismatches, please let me know. As I say, I’ll be brewing next Thursday. :pray:

What a great way to commemorate your late father.

Good luck with the brew - hope it goes well :cheers:

I would use a little less Crystal. Only because the addition of the Treacle sounds like it might be too sweet for me. But that's just me.

Good luck with your brew-i'm sure your Father would be proud. :cool:

Thanks guys.

I might just do that. I originally thought most of the sugar from the treacle would be traded off for alcohol but, having looked back at beersmith, it does say it imparts a very sweet flavour.
I'll have a re-jig before I brew next week and post the final recipe in the brewday section. Thanks for your help. :cheers:

I'll look forward to that. I might have a go at this one myself as it's a bit different from what i normally brew. :cool:

Oaky, I've re-jigged this now. Reduced the Crystal and upped some of the other malts by a small margin. I thought it might also be slightly under-hopped for a biggish beer so increased the bittering hops a tad. I also reduced the Hallertauer late additions as I've only 40g left and, if this comes out okay, I'm going to brew it again without the treacle to see how the two compare;

6.5Kg Pale Malt
180g Crystal
100g Wheat Malt
70g Roast Barley
50g Chocolate Malt

90 min mash & 90 min boil

55g Challenger (6.1%) 90 mins
55 g Goldings (5%) 90 mins
140g Treacle (20 mins)
20g Hallertauer 15mins

Beersmith predicts OG 1059, 43IBU with my 60% brewhouse effeciency.

Brewing tomorrow 02/10/08 - might post a brewday thread if I get time to take some pics. :)

Life is such a bitch!

Lost My Dad 6th April this year so know how You must feel.

Brew on Buzz and I'm sure that the secret ingredient 'Love' will make it one to savour.

I'll sink a pint of My IRS tonight for them both!
