Ok guys, whats your wee quirks when your brewing. For me, I only clean, steralise, brew, bottle/keg in the same t-shirt and knee length shorts ( They are washed..lol ). I have 2 fv`s, marked fv1 & fv2, I would never brew a dark beer in fv1. I would never start a brew on a Sunday. Things like that. then there`s the actual practical brewing then bottling quirkiness.

my brewing quirk is I'm positively lazy compared to some

make beer, ferment, bottle/keg, done!

All this racking to a secondary, or messing about with finings etc - can't be bothered

One of the quirks i`ve noticed whilst reading a lot of the posts, is that some people have an oddity about using clear glass bottles and will only use brown or green. Fook me, decent re-usable re-cappable glass bottles hare hard to come by at the best of times .

I tend to use clear glass (stella Cidre) for my cider and brown bottles bought from the homebrew store for my beer.

I thought it was ok to use clear if you kept them in the dark.

As far as I know it is.

I wouldn't buy clear bottles over brown ones though, and I don't drink enough clear bottles to cover my cider and beer stash.

For me I don't think beer/lager suits being in a clear bottle. Pale lagers like Corona etc are fine but for the most part I really think beer/lager suits being in brown bottles better. For me it will look a little "hooch" like without any label on when in a clear glass. Brown just pulls the look off better :D

If think it personnal preference. Strictly speaking you shouldn't use clear bottles as the light can affect the beer.
Howeber like yourself I never turn down a reusable beer bottle. Have over sixty old newky brown bottles and a few 1 litre swing tops. I use a couple for every brew to check the colour of my brew, amd when the brown bottles are used up will use these as a last resort.

Good to see another belfast man here!!!

Just reminded me. For every batch that I do I always use at least 1 clear bottle, just so that I can monitor clearing and sediment progress easily :)

Never ever look a gift horse in the mouth. Make the best off what you have. if it`s clear well cover it, stick it somewhere....uumm...dark, it ain`t fooking rocket science. I was hoping for a bit more than clear bottles. Scott `Bout ye big lad, ye ain`t going to get much tatey bread in glasgow `.

I like particular bottles for my beer favourites are black sheep. I also colour code with bottle tops, stout black, bitter in gold and IPA yellow. All in brown bottles. Cider in clear. :thumb:

Not been brewing long enough to develop any oddities, but I am developing a bad habit: dropping things on the floor - after they've been sanitized! REALLY need to stop that!

Dennis

PS: I use Grolsch swing top bottles, which I collect from the pub I work in! :thumb:

I've been collecting a few Grolsch bottles along the way. Bought a few new washers to replace some dubious looking ones. First time used in anger yesterday with a part brew of Red Ruby Ale. Will be interesting to see how they handle priming and conditioning.
As for quirkes..... my whole brew days are quirky... I haven't yet settled on one set way of doing things, a set routine if you like.
I do like to have a sit down at the end of a brewing / bottling session on an old camp chair with a glass of beer gazing at the new brew in place in the stash.
Wife says I'm on guard !
