If a recipe says add hops at 0 mins I guess that is when the heat is turned off after your (say) 60-90min boil. If so do you continue with cooling the brew and how long do you give the hops added before you drain off to fermenting vessel. Or is it a personal preference ?

adding hops at 0 min means after flame out theres usually a steep time eg 15 min then chill wort or you can steep the hops in the fermenter for a few days

thanks a lot..... I would have been draining the brew to the fermenter straight after pitching temp reached......

The aroma compounds of some hops evaporate off at temps lower than boiling point. So if you're using things like cascade (where you're after citrus) its worth bunging them in and doing your chill straight away so that the wort temp is dropping (or even throwing them in at 120F)

nah you wouldn't it takes a while before you can get to pitching temp and thats with a chiller :D

aagh you know what I mean... I take it that the 0min hops sits in the brew in that time when the brew is being chilled, for aroma purposes. or as pointed out can be thrown into the fermenter later.

How long would you leave a hop addition in the fermenter for?
I leave my brews in the FV for 14 days generally then bottle, would this be too long?

If I am dry hopping I don't add the hops untill after the main rush of fermentation usually after a week then leave it on the hops for another week. The reason for this is that not only will heat drive of the aromatic volatiles but also all the co2 rushing to the surface will take out the aromatics. As a result if you put dry hops in at the beginning you will have to use more to accomplish the same effect as waiting a week. :thumb: :thumb:
