Woke up this mornin and fancied gettin my brew on :D
So after brekkie and wait for rush hour traffic to die down i took a trip to the lhbs. Didnt know what i wanted so spent a good half hour picking a kit (and eyeing up the new girl ) and finally decided to give Brewferms Abbey another go. Last time i did this kit it didnt get anywhere near the claimed 8%abv and i thought i knew why. Kits normally require 1kg of sugars and because this kit only makes 20pints i only added 500g last time and when thinking back i thought id got this wrong but when i checked the instructions that was what it said.
Anyway i got home, did the cleaning and a few other chores then couldnt be arsed. So after dinner i thought "sod it might as well get it done" and set to it. I decided to throw the full kilo of enhancer into the mix although this was twice what the instructions said and funnily enough this gave an sg of 1070 which is what it states on the tin! and if it makes fg1010 thatll give the 8%!
Brewferm instructions are rubbish

hope it goes well man. if it tastes **** just fill ur motor up with it! 8% is a bit hefty for me, aftr a few u wud b steamboats! i get a decent glow from my 5.6% raspberry wheat beer!

I've done quite a few of the Brewferm kits, I can't remember having an issue with the instructions. Reasonably sure the O.G. has been pretty close. Then again I've not tried Abbey...yet.

I think I did the Abdij 2 or 3 years ago, and mine came out on the low side too. It tasted pretty good though. The Tripel, Diablo and Christmas are really excellent - at one time I did nothing but Brewferm kits. I have a Diablo kit upstairs just in case I'm lazy one weekend, although I quite enjoy spending 5 or 6 hours start to finish brewing now I'm AG. It's really relaxing. I wouldn't know what to do with myself now if brewing just took half an hour like the old kit days.

Yeah, does seem the stronger Brewferm kits are the better ones. I've greatly enjoyed all the ones mentinoed above. May well make the leap to A.G. this year. Just need the motivation!
