A friend is gutting and refurbing a farmhouse and has the copper hot water tank up for grabs.
Would it be suitable for an LT or even as a main boiler?

I will probably replace the element and plan to cut the top section off and have it open

It will make a great "Copper" Pale Ale :thumb:
Traditionally the wort was boiled in coper vessels so why not revive the tradition ;)

p.s I moved your post into a more suitable area ;)

Thanks Tubby I went to re post in the right place and it had moved, I thought wow what a cool site it even knows what your thinking

I have a copper tank in store, cos it was free!, which I had in mind to use it for making a heat exchanger for a herms or correcting mast water temperature, which don't need sterilising but wondered how soft solder would stand up to being sterilised. I like to give all brew items a sterilise now and again?
Any thoughts

would one be any good as a mash tun if its got all the insulation around it

Absolutely :thumb:
I've seen a couple used that way ;)
great stuff, although I've just spoke to my dad and the plumber who re did his central heating took the old copper tank away with him :( but he does have another one in his shed without the insulation, so maybe use that as a boiler. I do know a few plumbers though so i might ask them if they have one they don't want. I'm trying to get some gear together in the cheapest way possible ready for going AG next year
