Pubs in Durham

Hi all visiting Durham soon and was wandering if any forum members who live in Durham could point me in the direction of some decent real ale pubs. Me and tuther half are planning a relaxing weekend away and would like some quite pubs to visit the one's that don't have banging music ques seven deep at the bar and full of teenagers. Just quite [not dead] real ale pubs with proper drinkers in them if you get the drift. Also any i should avoid.

theres some great pubs in Durham me and mark loved them we went to gilesgate they made us feel welcome as well especially with our accents

Durham has some great pubs, went on a few real ale pub crawls whilst at uni in Newcastle.

I'd highly recommend the Colpitts. Its a Sam Smiths pub, so you'll only get their beers, but its cheap as chips (£1.20 a pint a couple of yrs ago) & has a great "old pub" atmosphere. (& a cheap pool table!)

A short walk away is Ye Olde Elm Tree which usually has a good range of cask ales on.

Next stop, The Shakespeare Tavern in the centre of Durham, a great old wooden pub, the back feels a bit like a maze with small rooms & always has a few great beers on.

The Victoria Hotel is another proper old school pub, a bit like stepping back in time, a bit of a walk but definitely worth it.

I love sammy Smiths and this Shakepear pub keeps cropping up as a good boozer. Any idea how far by foot from the radisson blu hotel.

Well did my two days in Durham. Loved it. Hotel spot on couldn't have been better. Pubs great. Went in The swan & 3 cygnets, Shakespear tavern Market tavern, Big Jugs, The half moon,Varsity, The Bishops mill,
There were many more pubs but we decided to do another trip there next year in the spring/summer and do the other pubs.
