Apologies if this is common knowledge but I was surprised to see on the protafloc technical info sheet it says "Increases rate of fermentation and attenuation" Did anyone else know this?

Below is copy and pasted from it.

Benefits
• Natural product which removes substantial quantities of haze forming material without affecting head retention
• Produces brighter worts, reducing the amount of finings required later
• Increases rate of fermentation and attenuation
• Increases filter runs
• Prolongs shelf life in small pack beers
• Reduces process time
• Is a processing aid not an additive so doesn’t require label declaration
• Reduced tank losses
• 5-10% more efficient than competitive products
• Tabletted for easy use

I had not come across this before. Is it just because there is less gunk in the FV, so that the total volume is lower at the start of fermentation?

I've never heard of this either. I'm surprised it isnt common knowledge

That's what makes me suspect that it is only marginally true. Having said that, I use protofloc in all my AG beers, including the dark ones. :thumb:

I have wondered about this.

What genus of seaweed is the protofloc constituent? it says 'Karrageen' on the web and we have loads of Carrageen seaweed here. But is it the same?,,,, Then I found this;

Uses of Carrageen
Carrageenan’s antioxidant activity is one of the most common reasons for using it as a health supplement. It also supports the digestive system, and is often used to make the capsules.

Antioxidant support

One study indicates that carrageenan oligosaccharides exhibit antioxidant activity. This characteristic helps supports cells from damage due to oxidative stress.

Gastric discomfort management

Carrageenan supplements may help manage stomach irritation and discomfort.

Digestive health support

Carrageenan may also help the digestive system by supporting regular bowel movements. The traditional method of preparing carrageenan for this purpose is to boil the seaweed in milk or water and drink the resulting fluid.

Signs You May Need Carrageenan
A high total cholesterol level is one of the most significant signs that you may benefit from chitin supplements. Poor kidney function is also an indication that chitin may help you. Common symptoms of kidney failure include physical weakness, poor appetite and insomnia. Intestinal disorders characterised by inflammation may also mean that chitin can benefit you. Additional reasons to consider chitin supplements include skin grafts and a need to manage your weight.

Hey, I may be harvesting soon?

I use protofloc in all my beers. I am of the understanding it is animal free.
I have searched far and wide for info on the ingredients, and found nowt but good veggie matter.
if anyone knows otherwise, then i'll keep on using it and recommend it to my vegan beer buds.

I use it for the same reason and for that reason I don't use finings. I don't have many vegetarian or vegan friends but if I did come across some they would still be able to drink my beer...if they had the strength to lift the glass that is....
