Prolapsed disc, finding it quite depressing.

will try some and see if my issues get better :-)

Well a year on from the sciatica and there has been a very slow but gradual improvement which now it seems that its leveled off. Still got numbness but the loss of power is not as pronounced. So, after much uming and aring I have decided that I will do a martial arts class (or maybe half of one) and see how it goes.

Might be Monday or the following one but the only way to find out what I can and can't do is to give it a try!

Take ibuprofen beforehand, have some ready for after, and some musclefreezegel stuff
You may want to do something like swimming to help build up muscle strength in a less challenging environment alongside whatever else you do
I've missed a load of karate lately as my sciatica has flared up plus I did something to my right knee - think I want one of those support bands on it
Humping full fermenters around is not good for my back!

I'd planned for the ibuprofen before and tiger balm applied topically afterwards and a few glugs of Isle of Jura for good measure. I might just have a swim tomorrow although if the forecast is to believed I won't have to go to the sports centre.

What do you mean loss of power?

I find that if i do my back exercises every day I can still work out several times a week. Just need to be careful with the movements.

Hope u have a good one,

DirtyC

Loss of power is what the physio called it but it could be termed weakness I suppose. If move my toe or ankle joints upwards then its significantly weaker in the right than left. However that has improved too, initially I had trouble with my toes curling when I put wellies on and not being able to straighten them but that doesn't happen any more.

I'm keeping up my back exercises and I hope the training will aid the core strength too.was It may be tonight when I start back, but I've been awake since the cat brought a mouse in at 5:30 this morning so I'll see how knackered I am when I get home.

I always felt the loss of power was more the nerves refusing to believe the muscles were still there than actual muscle weakness. The real problem is in the spine. Same effect in day-to-day life though. Building up strength and flexibility in the lower back is key to keeping pressure off those nerves

Yes its a "signalling problem" rather than muscle weakness which is why I guess they refer to it as a loss of power rather than loss of strength.

Well I'm nervous but looking forward to it, I will play it by ear as to whether I do a ½ class or a full one and report back later!

If it was my back I wouldn't trust it to anyone other than a proper experienced Chiropractor. Physical intervention corrects physical displacement before it causes associated damage.
Peace to your body, mind you don't get bunged up taking all those pain killers , this can antagonize your condition .
All the very best.

Well so far so good I pitched up at 8pm only to find the instructor had changed the times but not updated the website and there was only 30 mins of the class left. A very brief stretch off then into some kicking drills followed by some points sparring.

A good test and I'll just have to see how I feel tomorrow.

That's a good sign.
I find humping full fermenters around can set mine off, so be careful!

There must be an easy way to rig something to move these about :hmm:
