Hi,

Just about to keg my christmas ale and want to prime with black treacle does anyone know how much I should use?

Thanks

I used 115g for a 40 pint stout and that was a bit too fizzy really.

Delicious though!

Hi Wardup82.

What is your Christmas ale. I have a 40 pint Northern brown ale and was thinking of priming around 95g but I'm not to sure if I'm brave enough to have a go. I have heard you prime slghtly higher amount than sugar but don't take my word for it. I usualy prime at 85g bitter mild etc in a barrell but wheat beers around 150g.

I remember having a pint of christmas pudding beer in Wetherspoons many years ago and loved it, not seen it since so thought I would try and make my own.

A neighbour gave me a kit that they said they wouldn't use so I thought I would try and make a christmas ale with it (as the kit cost me nothing wasn't bothered if I ended up throwing it away!). Basically made the kit as per instructions but crushed up a large christmas pudding and put it in the FV along with brewing sugar.

BUT.....it hasn't worked  Tried a bit from the test jar and I can't taste any christmas pudding! Not even sure if I like the resulting beer but I will keg it and see what happens.

Don't suppose any one has ever come across and christmas pudding flavour beer. Even commercial stuff?!

Wow put Christmas pudding in the fv i didn't know you could do that  Braver than me.
let me know what it turns out like please.

some exists, i forget where. if you wanted to rescue this as an xmas brew you could put allspice, cinnamon and clove into a muslin bag and steep it in :thumb:

treacle is like 3/4 sugar, so you need to use about 130% compared to sugar :thumb:

Rob, great idea thanks for that. I did notice that when testing there was a lot of grease over the outside of my turkey baster, what I use to get a sample (of beer)! Obviously this is from the pudding but will this cause any problems?

A google search seems to show that Young's may to a bottled version so will keep my eyes peeled!

it will be fine and drinkable but the head retention might be bad. but all things considered, you're already there now, so drink it and enjoy it!
