had a question about priming sugar- I know how much to use from the instructions. But I don't know how much water to dissolve it in before adding. Also, do I add it to boiling water or do i add it to cold water and bring to boil? does it matter? should I let it cool down before adding t beer?

thanks

I just put the sugar in a sterilized mug, add just enough boiling water out of the kettle as i need to get it dissolved, then add it to the beer.

batch priming is where you add it all at once to the fv right? I'm going to do that too- only I'll rack the beer to another empty fv which'll have the sugar in the bottom

If I need to prime bottles I use 5ml of sugar solution for each bottle.

So, if I'm doing 40 bottles I dissolve the sugar required in to 200ml of water and then dose each bottle with 5ml from a 20ml syringe (4 bottles per syringe).

It's difficult to measure repeatedly the exact same amount of suger over and over again and I got fed up of having different carbonation levels in each bottle.....one or two gushers as well.

Using measured doses with a syringe seems to have sorted all that.

Silly question but priming bottles... i put mine in the bottle granulated is this wrong? and what's the difference?

Thanks

Dunc

Nothing wrong with that. However if you batch prime then you get an even amount of fizz with all your bottles. Its a bit of a faff putting half a teaspoon of sugar in each bottle and very hard to get an exact half teaspoon in all the bottles. So batch priming is quicker and you get more even results.

I used proper measuring spoons when priming my bottle and I'm sure a few granules of sugar makes no difference to the fizz.

the pro's for batch priming is that you are using a measurment of sugar/dextrose etc for 23ltrs or whatever your brew size is and you don't have to use same size bottles

the con's are that you need another FV to use/sterilise!, I still prefer to batch prime tho'
