Potential Disaster....opinions/advice please

Hi....I'm fuming with myself :evil:
I would welcome some advice or opinion.

Syphoning 20 litres of beer (to get it off the cold break and yeast) tonight that I'd crash cooled.
I lost the syphon effect at about 15 litres and had to restart it....drew beer in to my mouth and the reflex action came in to effect and I spat the small amount of beer in to the receiving vessel
Why I didn't just swallow eh? [insert joke of your choice here ]

I've drawn off the rest off the beer and put it back in the 'fridge at 2 deg.

I'm gutted as I feel that I've probably ruined the beer and it will develop an infection.
I've thought of adding some sodium met, but can't find anything regarding post fermentation addition ...... I do seem to remember reading somewhere that it is a permitted beer preservative, but this must only be against oxidation :wha:

Thinking I may be saved with the beer being cold.....get it gelatined and drink young from a corny?? Might be a bit harsh being 5.5% and full of hops, but better than infected beer.

Double gutted.......it was the hop rockets first outing and the beer smells tremendous (for now).

Any thoughts / advice / soothing welcome. Thanks.

Mark - for what little advise I can give as only doing kits at the moment, I did exactly the same as you whilst syphoning a few months ago and thought that was it £13-00 or so down the drain, but it turned out fine, no different to any others.

My advise is to mix up some Videne in a sprayer 1.25ml per ltr for no rinse, and if you need to suck on the syphon tube you can spray the end of the tube as it kills any nasties on contact

Either that or get your dog to suck on it as they supposed to have far cleaner mouths than ours, fact :shock:

I don't lick what my dog licks (he growls if I get too close) :P

Don't panic.

How long had it been in primary? I'm assuming a few days seeing as you are talking trub and 5.5%.

The few thousand gob bugs maximum that you might have introduced will be totally overwhelmed by the billions of yeast cells that would be present. so I reckon you'll be fine.

Unless you'd chewed a dozen drosophilidae (fruit flies) beforehand, of course.

ive done the same aswell and had no problems. whilst bottling the same brew my tap seal had come loose and some beer was coming out from the rubber seal so i had to stick my arm right in the brew up to my elbow to tighten the screw! nae worries!

Frustrated syphoning into bottles, I have done the same.. sofar... nothing bad. I think with any beer with a good volume % wise you will be ok. But dont store for more than afew months.... time can take its effect...

Thanks for your replies folks. I feel a little better now knowing that others have done it and seemingly gotten away with it.
I will let you know how I get on.

I have though made a promise to myself that I will fit taps to the bottom of every fermenter that I have so I can just attach a line a turn the tap :lol:
That or get one of those auto-syphon thingys.

While cooling AG#11 a few days ago I checked under the lid to find tap water spraying out of a connector into the brew ARRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHH :x

I was gutted as I'm pretty meticulous about things when I brew, after alot of stomping around and swearing swmbo actually gave me some good brewing advice, just see what happens :thumb:

I'm hoping it's not been a complete disaster, it's fermenting away like a beast and smells as it should. It just looks like I've got a little more beer with a little less gravity than I intended lol!

I'm sure yours will be fine.

Out of interest, I discovered that the taps for waterbutts are the same asmthose
for FV's (black in colour) - also they are available in two types hozelock fitting and non.

I decided to get the hozelock ones, £1.45 off ebay (£4 in wickes)
I got some food grade pvc 13mm hosePipemfrom a supplier called ebiz on ebay couple of quid
Hozelock connctor from b&q (blue ones) £1
The tube and connector snap on the tap, and go in the steri bucket before use.

Piece of the proverbial!

I have a syphon for the liquid below the tap line, but I tip the fv to get as much out as i can - usually tip it with an airlock bung
