as to carry on from my previous topic... it got very messy today.

With the werry kit it had been fermenting in the FV for 6 days, the readings were around 1016 for past few days and it seemed all good to barrel. Bubbling had stopped completely. I did stir it with a sterelized spoon once which made it bubble a bit more but then stop.

The process with the syphon was messy. Loadsa froth formed in the barrel and it almost overflowed with froth so I had to stop the syphon. When I tried to continue the syphoning it wasnt happening and the bottom of the FV looked like white lungs or brains. Looked quite vile and I think i got some of it in my mouth when syphoning.... yuck

So now possibly 1/4 of a gallon was left in the FV and The rest is in the barrel. I have added the beer enhancer (instead of sugar) and sealed the barrel.

Does this seem like complete disaster?

edit: after emptying the FV I noticed there was about 2 pints worth of liquid and the rest was that white stuff that looked like sick

The white lung / Brains was it the yeast that would be sitting on the bottom? or is it something else?
Also you want to avoid using your mouth for syphoning, not the most sterile tool is it.
Hold you tube in a U shape and fill with once boiled water then hold one end sealed put the open end in the Fv and the release the other end in the keg :thumb:

If it was yeast I would say everything should be ok. Next time try raising your keg a little so you don't splash the beer into the Keg run it down the sides as not to introduce Oxygen into the beer, which then could cause off flavours later down the line.

thanks for the reply... by the sounds of things it was yeast, Maybe the colouring had a hint of green to it.

I was trying to find the tube for syphoning without needing to suck, but the shop had run out so I had to resort to the instructions.

just hoping now the beer enhancer would help and prevent thoese offish flavours

DON'T PANIC

It will probably be fine. Make sure when you siphon that the end of the siphon is under the surface of the beer in the keg. That will introduce less air into the brew.

Seeing the yeast cake for the first time can be a bit disconcerting. :D

thanks :D thats put my mind at rest. I'll bear that in mind next time with making sure less oxygen goes into the barrel.

I think this time il put it mostly down to rubbish instructions with the bucket kit. If I had done exactly as the instructions there read I would have 1% alcohol sour tasting beer that contains a lot of sterelizer, no CO2, and a barrel full of that "yeast cake"

Probably i'll leave it a few days now at 22c ish. Then put it somewhere cooler for a week or so with a few tastes every few days through the barrel tap :D

At least it seems something drinkable will come out of it still
