Hi guys,
Just drew a sample of my beer from the fv and my hand accidentally touched the beer. Is there a high chance this will now be contaminated?
I had just sanitised everything in a basin of star san, including my hand which touched the beer.

I was going to post its probably ruined, but I'll take the bottled batch to make sure... Clint is right (probably)...

I've only made 8 or 10 brews so am no expert, but I'm pretty relaxed about sticking my (washed) hand in the beer to fish out a hop bag or similar and used an unsanitised (but clean) spoon or jug to take samples, and so far I've been lucky. So pretty sure you'll be OK ;)

I wouldn't chance luck...all those lucky brews will be just that when you do contaminate a brew and have to tip it away...it's not really the cost it's all the care and attention you put in,in anticipation of a nice beer at the end...

Don't worry about it.

Over the years I've had to fish out a variety of stuff from the FV at various stages of fermentation and (luckily) none of the brews have "gone off" a a direct result.

The Stirrer from the Yeast Starter is the favourite. TWICE I have pitched it into the wort along with the Yeast Starter and had to recover it with a telescopic magnet; and I can't even begin to count the number of times my hands and fingers have got wet with the beer during bottling.

It adds to the excitement waiting to see if everything is okay ... :laugh8:

... and if your brew does "go off" the chances are that it will probably be something else that's nailed you!

Enjoy! :thumb:

I'me with Dutto I have a good clean and steralising procedure as most but some people are too anal regards it which can frighten newbies yes it is important but I too have had to fish things out or forgot to starsan the spoon (even though washed thoroughly) and the ones that spray everything every 30 seconds with the starsan well is it really necessary really ? if thats what floats your boat do it but it comes across that it must be done. I do not find it is needed to that extent and the times questions are asked like this one shows how newbies see it as the law. I am waiting for the at your peril replies but overkill is what I see

You know you can draw the stirrer across the bottom and up the side of a plastic fermenter with a magnet on the outside? Been there, done that. ;)

If you want excitement during the fermentation process try putting 5 fermenters in the bedroom and wondering if you are going to wake up in the morning.

Some of yuze guys worry too much; I once had a dopey cat who dived into an open FV of ale. Turned out absolutely fine except for the odd flea and bit of fur floating about.

But how was the cat after?!

Wet. But seriously my eyes turn skyward at the way some folk obsess about sanitation after some of the stuff I've gotten away with, like the genuine cat incident. In fact I've gotten away with everything - no infected brews in 30-odd years.

Cheers guys. Certainly put my mind at rest anyway. I'm sure it'll be fine and it's another brew day today. Cheers

Thanks for that tip! :thumb:

I thank anyone who can lift a full 23 litre FV in one hand whilst firkling about underneath it with a magnet in the other!

I can peel an orange in my pocket with one hand whilst rolling a cig with the other hand, behind my back and with a hurricane blowing. But that...

I once worked with a bloke who could light a *** in his pocket if it meant that he didn't have to offer them round! :thumb:
