Can anyone recommend a porter kit with no liquorice taste? (Can't stand liquorice). What about the Festival Pride of London? If anyone can confirm whether this has / doesn't have a liquorice taste, that would be a huge help! Thanks...

Porters dont normally have a liquorice taste. If you have had a porter with this taste it's because it hasnt had enough time to conditon. The liquorice taste is an ester from the yeast. It will condition out with enough time

Thanks. Some do seem to have an element of liquorice, though, and some, like Sainsburys London Porter explicitly advertise it, as though it were a good thing. (The outrage). Do people think the Festival Pride of London is a liquorice-free zone?!

Not tried the Festival kit, but Woodfordes Nog is a nice dark ale/porter without any overly strong dominant flavors. Definitely not liqourish, that's for sure.

You could try a paler kit, like a ruby ale, as a base and steep some dark crystal and chocolate malt. That way you'll have a fresher tasting kit and more control of the flavour you put in it.
