Hi Guys,
Just (possibly) a quick question. I'm moving my brewing gear to my shed. Built a stand, got the electrics in and bought a fridge and temp controller etc, now for the plumbing. I've bought some 15mm plastic pipe and what I think I need in speed fittings to plumb the chiller and the HLT in but how do you guys connect to your house pipe-work?
I've got an outside tap so what connections do I need to get from a 15 mm plastic pipe to a hose lock or similar connection? Wandering aimlessly round B&Q just confuses me and the so called experts they have in there are next to useless. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm getting a headache staring at plumbing bits!!!

1. Don't buy from B&Q - too expensive. Use Screwfix (same company different prices) or Propagation.

2. I assume you mean you already have an outside tap and hose to temporarily run to your shed and the speedfit is just internal to the shed.

I would use the following fittings from toolstation:

http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Plu...Tap+Connector+15mm+x+34+BSP/d20/sd3307/p29210 which gets from the JG to a tap connector and then adapt to a hozelok connector with this http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Landscaping/Hose+Fittings/Brass+Internal+Adaptor/d130/sd3316/p39197

An alternative could be to use an appliance tap to connect to and then you can turn the water off at the shed end in an emergency http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Plu...fit/Appliance+Tap+15mm+x+34/d20/sd3307/p20317 and connect to the hose with http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Lan...astic+Tap+Connector+34+Tap/d130/sd3316/p16793

Hope this helps.

you'd have to check the size of the outlet on your outside tap but this may work. not suitable for a permanent connection outdoors but should be ok for a temporary connection on brew days.

Wrong connector really - that's for installing a bath tap and fits on the tail - not really on the outlet side of a garden tap and I think he wants to connect the JG to the end of the hosepipe rather than direct to the tap. May work though!

Odd combination of stock from the ebay seller plumbing fittings and lingerie :wha:

Thanks for the ideas fella's. I know B&Q's not the best but I'm doing the job today hopefully. I need some kind of bulkhead fitting to fit to the shed. Anyway I'm now off to baffle myself even more!! I'm sure I'm making it more complicated than it is.

you only need a bit of 15 mm copper pipe on the end and push it inside a bit of garden hose then attach with normal garden hose tap connector (which you probably already have ) use a jg coupler to attach copper pipe to speed fit pipe ( you also need inserts when using plastic pipe with fittings , and i would also lag the pipe if leaving it attached )

Hi, fella's
Right, I've settled on an outside tap kit. My theory being that water doesn't necessarily have to flow out of the tap. Got a hose connector for the tap and I'll put a short piece of 15mm copper pipe into the circuit inside using the JG connectors unless I can plumb it in properly. Anyway, thanks for the help. It certainly got my creative juices flowing, which is what it's all about. Thanks again.

I teed off the outside tap to a separate stop tap for the brewery, then buried at 650mm up to the shed. I used jg pipe as it was free and just insulated it. Then used copper at each tap to terminate. Then off the tap in the shed I have some food grade hose that is used for filling hlt or connecting the I/c. Even I had paid for any of the bits it would probably cost less than £50.

Well here it is. Looks like a dogs dinner but it works and is leak free!

Tap on the left is for the HLT, centre one the chiller, 15 mm pipe on left, supply to the sink and underneath is the drain for the sink.
HLT Tap (the black bucket isn't my HLT before anyone asks)

The outside terminals. The tap is the 'in' which has it's own dedicated hose to connect to the outside tap of my house and the drain will eventually have a grid etc leading to the main drain.

garden hose may impart an off flavor to the water, best to look for a hose designed for drinking water not watering plants, camping and caravan suppliers sell blue pottable water hoses..

I used to use a garden hose for filling the hlt. It was new and only used for brewing and I had problems with applastic taste that stopped when I changed the supply.
If the brewshed is going to be longterm I'd dig and bury a supply to the shed.

I was thinking of using the same silicone tubing that I'm using on my gear., hooking it up just for brewdays. When I'm not using it I'll store it rolled up, anything that gets inside will get flushed out before I start. It gets heated to 80c anyway which will kill most things.
My system can get drained down when not in use using the tap then shut and sealed.
That piece of hose you can see is only 10 or 12 inches long and attached to the outside tap. It's the only garden hose in the system. The rest is JG or silicone.
I will have a look in the local camping shop for pottable water hose though, never thought of that. Thanks guys

I think it would be fine, however remember to sterilise it occasionally, I have some black silicon/PVC hose at work that is filled with black gunk. I wouldnt want that in beer

As you can see I've insulated the roof, put Lino down, the temp controller came for the fridge. The photo doesn't do it justice.
I don't know if you can make out on top of the cooler Mash Tun my solar pump with dimmer switch to transfer from the boiler to fermenter. Just Drainage to do, and fit my cooker hood.
I do intend making the water supply more permanent eventually but the patio will have to come up, and the garden for the drainpipe SWMBO won't be happy!
