The word Viking derives from the old Norse "vik", meaning a creek or inlet, and was used to describe people living in the coastal areas or the many small islands of what is now Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.

These people were such prolific raiders that in old English the two became synonymous, and the word Viking became a verb. One was not a Viking, one went Viking. It meant, roughly, to go raiding by sea.

It faded out of use entirely in middle English, and modern English usage is due almost entirely to a conscious effort by historians to revive the word for academic usage.

Abraham Lincoln was not the abolitionist he is widely regarded as today. He didn't like slavery, but did not oppose it's existence either.

However he did vehemently oppose it's expansion into new states to the west.

During the civil war, he promised freedom to all slaves who defected and fought for the Union. This however, was more of a military strategy, than a desire for immediate emancipation of slaves.
