So I just took a gravity reading at first wort, at about 80c, into a trial jar (the type that comes free with the hydrometer).

Accidentally watered it down whilst cooling, so thought sod it and threw it back into the kettle.

But the trial jar has gone a bit, well, soft. As I doubt it's food grade plastic I have serious concerns that I've just poured a load of plastic into my wort.

I'm hoping that this is not a drama, or that it will boil off!

Any advice!?

Bit confused by your post, but I'd be very surprised if sample jars aren't food grade (EU and all that)
No harm done id say, unless, you actually poured molten plastic in :-D

Rob.

I melted my first trial jar putting boiling wort into it too. If any acetones or such like leached out of the trial jar the amount will be tiny in a full length brew. If you melted any actually plastic and it went into your wort again the amount would be tiny. Think of all the food packaging that is plastic and (some of it) undoubtedly not as food grade as it should be which you probably ingested over a life time. I would'nt worry too much.

Either that ^^^^^ or your going to die a horrible death from plastic poisoning

Right now you guys have got me all concerned, I have just bought a plastic soil riddle to allow my BIAB grain bag to drain back into the boiler, its a perfect fit for the rim of my boiler so thought I had played a blinder.

I have just taken a look at the symbol which is a triangle formed of arrows with a 5 in the middle & PP underneath, after doing a little research I have found out its Polypropylene, this tells me its probably going to be safe to use.

Stand easy chap, no need to worry. The wort has to be in contact with the plastic for an extended period of time for anything to happen. It's the same with using copper for stuff like wort chillers. The wort is in contact with it for too short a time for it too leach into the wort.

I dunk sparge using a couple of plastic buckets from the pound shop. I use the same buckets to wash my bike with - I do wash em out first though before brewing with them again
