The subject of chemicals leaching from plastic into your wine has been discussed many times, no one has ever given proof this actually takes place and how much is leeched if any, having said that I moved to glass screw tops a while ago because of this discussion, for me its not worth the risk and bottles are free if you ask for them.
I would not pour boiling water directly into a cold DJ for obvious reasons.

I'm with you Chippy but on the other hand surely food grade plastic is safe? Maybe?

No worries, it is something people should be aware of.

The problem comes when you store something in the plastic bottle it was not designed to store, i used plastic (PET) spring water bottles for a long time (maybe 2 years) and the more i read on the subject of chemical leaching the more concerned i became, in the end it got the better of me and i moved over to glass screw tops bottles and novatwist caps, i still don't know for sure if keeping alcoholic drink in bottles that are not designed for the purpose is going to cause health issues but for me it was not worth the risk.

If you know the risks of using plastic for anything that goes into your body then its a personal choice really, but its so easy to buy/find/scrounge glass dj's, I've never bought one myself but must have about 20-25!
And with so many wine drinking establishments around its easy to get bottles if you don't mind a bit of prep/cleaning/de-labelling.them..

You make a good point Chippy, now do I duplicate your research or carry on regardless........ ??

Dayuum internet!!!

Still it comes in handy for sourcing cheap swing tops:lol:

I ended up getting in touch with the food agency (cannot remember the actual name) the advice I got was so confusing I gave up, it would seem you cannot get an answer to the question if I put alcohol into a plastic bottle not designed to store it will it leach chemicals, now you know why I moved to glass.

I think I'll go down the 'head in the sand' approach to the plastic bottle vs glass argument

I don't want to be thinking too much about what I'm letting enter my temple of a body 😯
