OK - Thought I'd let you kind people know that I dutifully tried as many of your suggestions as politely possible last night, considering the shared cost on the rounds.
I had a porter on tap, then...
Cantillon Gueuze - I'd read up so I knew what I was drinking, and I made sure that (at £4.75 a pop) this was on my round! So, a blended Lambic then basically? - a mix of younger and slightly older Lambics, to give the older stuff an extra fermentation. Great suggestion - obviously the weirdest tasting, controlled sourness and an acquired taste. Wouldn't have had a second with so many others to try, but I will revisit the style...
Delirium Nocturnum - Another great choice - not wildly different to the Rochefort 6. Lovely, lovely warm dark fruity taste. Easy drinking.
Then I had a Rochefort 6...
Orval - makes me think of a green duck puppet! The bottle appeared to say that it was only bottled this February, and I think this was reflected in the taste. Not (quite) as smooth as the others, with different flavours coming through separately, but still very very good. I'd be interested to try an older bottle. It was more appley than the Nocturnum to my pallet, which could turn out really great. Maybe this is how it should be and it's been bulk aged for long enough before bottling. Either way it was another great choice and I will definitely revisit.
Then (a friend twisted my arm) I had a Rochefort 8. I probably wasn't the best judge by this point  but essentially the same taste as the Rocheforte 6, just stronger ABV.
Then I had a bacon sandwich, water, and a lie in, paracetomol...It was all in the name of research and a right treat. Well done 'The Valley', Scarborough (with whom I have no association or interests!) for having so much well kept stock. Every one I asked for was there. And thanks again for such inspired suggestions. Wish I could have tried every one.
