They were discussion this rising trend on 5 live earlier Anna Foster said they do it for close family but not for friends, when the subject was raised in the office some said they had lots of these. aheadbutt

Fortunately i don't know any families that are that shallow they would think we would like a Christmas card with a picture of themselves on the front, if i did get one it would go straight in the bin, i hate all this attention seeking bullocks that has steamed from social media (something else i hate with a vengeance)

Bah Humbug.

Only us old farts. :laugh8:

Joking aside SWMBO has always sent them to workmates and friends and always gets lots in return.

I know it’s not exactly related to the OP but what about those “what we’ve done this year” news letters that some include in their cards!? Shaming you in to thinking “should I have sent one of these?”. NOOOOOO! A card is enough! More than enough if sent from someone I knew +10 years ago and haven’t seen since.

Spot on Buffer that was exactly the sort of thing I meant by social media attention seeking bollocks in the OP, I hate it.

Usually get one of the sickening trash cards from my sister.
She lives in America, so I suppose she knows no better. They're always the same old pictures of her, and her two daughters wearing identical Christmas jumpers, and hubby wearing something similar - blurgghhh...
They also go out to the wilderness to fell their own tree before "trimming" it, showing the photos to any unsuspecting fool that will look.
Really quite vomit inducing....

I assume she isn't a member of the forum :laugh8:

As stated previously, she is now American. I doubt very much she would recognise herself from my comments!

PS I don't look like I did in my avatar anymore...

Woops, have to confess that I have occasionally sent such cards. Usually of suitable photos we've taken like the kids with a snowman etc.
Mostly because we're so cheap that the idea of actually buying a Christmas card appalls me. Just print them off at home.
These days I only send about 10 cards, 8 this years as 2 of them have died.

Do people still send Xmas cards?
We don’t. We give the money we would spend on cards to charity instead. The wife and I usually pick a charity each - I’ve done Ataxia U.K. the last 2 years and will probably make it a hat trick this year; My wife did McMillan the year her nana died and CHAS last year because a couple we went to school with had a child in one of their hospices.

When it comes to sending cards, it’s not the cost of the card, it’s the postage which is usually more than the price of the card! I’ve got grandkids in Australia and USA. Sending cards to them (which I don’t mind) today cost me £1.70 per card. Yes, £1.70 per card! ashock1

Our neighbours were loitering outside their house (which was all Christmassed up) with garish Christmas attire weekend before last.
We wondered what the dickens was happening and then a photographer arrived, complete with snow machine.
They were posing all over their front step, with the kids looking suitably non impressed.

They were the talk of the street!

Just awaiting my personalised Christmas card now... 🎅🎄
...not holding my breath.

Please explain to me the point of Christmas cards

Christmas is a commercial bonanza - the commercial world love it. I imagine Amazon's profit has jumped once again this year

Let's make a list of the other really important "events" the commercial world use to get us to part with our money

- Valentines Day
- Mothers Day
- Fathers Day
- Grandparents Day
- Easter Eggs
- Boiling your breakfast day
- Black Friday
- OB's Birthday (incidentally 10th December - every year)
- etc, etc

If I want to express some feeling/concern/greeting to someone why wait until Christmas?

Wouldn't a phone call be more appropriate and appreciated?

There is some sad barstewards about.

I would describe them as 'aspirational' which I guess is fair enough as long as it doesn't involve me.
They provide amusement and don't seem to frighten the horses. 🤡

I'm not a fan of sending cards full stop but you find yourself in the trap of they send us one so we need to send on back.

I'm even less of a fan of sending in gifts and the like to the kids school teachers. The missus knows the answer I'll give if she mentions the idea, so she doesn't bother now. Especially this year when the lockdown was on, they haven't even been in school and we had not a single call or email from the school to them and virtually no work sent for them to do. They should be sending us extravagant gifts.
