Hi all,

Just racked my Czech Pilsner to secondary for lagering having finished the diacetyl rest.

Any idea what this is floating on the surface - is it pellicle?

I did wonder if it's just bits of yeast from the walls of the FV just floating around?

I've racked from beneath the surface just in case - gravity 1.010, tasted like lager, no of flavours so fingers crossed.

Cheers,

Matt

That wouldn’t cause me a huge amount of concern if you’ve been super good on cleaning and santitary practises.

Time will tell because if you get something appear on the top when you come to bottle/keg that lager when it’s ready then you do have an (infraction) wtf??? I meant “infection” I’m afraid.

Just don’t open the lid from now until your ready to bottle/keg it.

How many times have you opened the fermenter?
1. Once, 24-48 hours after pitching to skim some yeast of the krausen using a sanitised spoon.
2. I used a syringe (sanitised) through the airlock bung hole to take a gravity sample after a week.
3. And finally today when I came to syphon it off to the secondary

If it tastes good i would say its probably just yeast floating on the top and it will settle out. I don't open mine until i add finings and by then its pretty clear.

Thanks for that beercat - either way there's not much i can do now so I'll let it do it's thing in the cryogenic lagering chamber* and what will be will be acheers.

Hi Matt,
I get that every time I use Mangrove Jack's M84 Bohemian Pilsner Yeast. First time I panicked, Kept the beer but threw away the yeast I'd top-harvested. The beer was fine so I now crop the yeast as normal. It's disconcerting, but just a characteristic of the yeast, I guess.

Ooh, interesting..... aunsure.... Thanks for that Mike, that's useful to know athumb..

Just Googled the Wyeast equivalent for M84, which is 2124 Bohemian lager - i used 2278 Czech pilsner, not the same but perhaps a closely related strain with similar characteristics maybe..... aunsure....
