Clicked on a google search link on overclocking
and the page came up with a popup "Metropolitan Police, you
have been viewing ****ography, racist material.
Your browser is locked until you pay £200 in Itunes
vouchers to here".
My browser (Safari on an ipad) was locked, but
I found a cure on t'interweb - in settings, safari,
clear history and disable javascript.

Decent antivirus software should stop anything like that. I have Norton on my laptop, phone, wife and kids laptops, phones and tablets. Yes I have to pay for it but its generally regarded as the best and that is my criteria for choosing. I dont mind paying for the best.

Ye, I've had Norton for well over ten years and NEVER had any problems whatsoever. Had something called Bullguard before that. Christ Almighty that was unbelievably, undescribably bad and ended up wrecking the pc.

Dunno about the latest versions but in the world of IT Norton has always been regarded as a bit of a joke.. If it works for you great but it was always badly written and really bloated and I mean extremely bloated.. The amount of peoples machines I removed and they couldn;t believe how much quicker it was

They used to buy daily patterns from another company back in mid 2000s. (I think trent Micro but it could have been Kaspersky) Not sure if they still do.

As I say 2017 may be okay.

I stopped using AVG Free for the same reason it just seemed the newer the version the more bloated and sluggish it became, i tried Avira which is still highly rated then moved to Panda a few months ago, i don't think i will be moving to anything else unless its ratings drop.

For those (like me) who like to daily update you can perform one in settings, you usually find it is already up to date when you get there but hitting the button givers peace of mind.

I read loads and loads of reviews and went for the one that most said has the best protection and quickest response to new threats. Slowing the system down was one of the downsides listed, but in my experience Windows is far worse. I wont pay for Apple stuff, I think thye are better but rip you off, I like Linux but there are to many compatibility problems (unless thats improved since I used it).

I did a major corporate review of antivirus products last year, Went with Webroot in the end, minimal impact on the system and compatible with multiple OS. Not had any issues.

Don't you have any antivirus program to get rid of this? Such scam is usually caused by people clicking on unsafe link. Users might try rebooting the PC without network connection if they receive such message.

This is weird!
I was searching for overclocking cos my pc was sooo slow.
I use AGV.
So, thanks to Chippy's comment above, I will remove it
and use another.

I expected the popup to say "Metropolitan Police, you have been viewing ****ography, racist material. Your browser is locked until you send us your a link to your best stuff"

Pete download and run ccleaner https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&r...eaner/&usg=AFQjCNFqc3gqw6VR1MZR6fWB6o7reMHZPw

Before you run it make sure you know all your passwords as it is very thorough and you may have to log into a few sites once it's done its thing, install malwarebytes as mentioned above https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&r...W3msWwd25fxqJyLR6VEy_w&bvm=bv.146094739,d.bGg

And run that.

Once done install panda antivirus and uninstall AVG, run a full scan and let us know how you get on.

Chippy.
Done all that, just finished now (broadband problems).
First impressions - not all that different.
I'll give it a week, then post if I think it's faster.
Thanks again for your help.

Having read your last post today I probably should have said AVG will make a PC run slower than Panda but if it's running noticeably slower the problem will be elsewhere.

When you say running slow do you mean the internet?

No, it's something slowing down my actions.
It takes up to 30 sec for my chrome browser to start.
