Overrated beers

When visiting my father in law in Rhoose, South Wales. Had to have a pint of Brains bitter as all the people i’d met raved about it. Certainly won’t be having another, a very ordinary beer.

I forgot about the abomination that is Brains! I would be afraid of offending the toilet if I flushed it down there.

I think that depends on the cellarman skills of the licensee. I’ve always thought that a pint of Brains’s Dark from a cask is one of the tastiest weaker beers around. But any cask conditioned beer has got the propensity to taste like something that goes down the toilet if it’s not looked after properly.

Reminds me of a pint at the renowned Blue Anchor at Helston.

I’m fortunate enough to live within walking distance of 3 pubs, we don’t have mains gas, you can’t get a phone signal and the power cuts out all the time, but we have pubs!

The difference in the cask beer between the three is night and day. You can tell the pubs who look after their beer vs the one that clearly just caters to tourists.

The pubs reopen here in Wales tomorrow so it will be interesting to see how fresh the beer is. I won’t be going until my three weeks have passed from my 2nd *** though (still too cold to sit outside here ).

Can’t say I’m a fan Knowing what they’re made from is enough to put me off tbh (it’s knowing the jobs of the organs that puts me off , and the taste ).

It’s held up as some kind of benchmark of modern British beers but every time I’ve had it it’s been bland.

Totally with you on that, decided to pick myself up some last year after hearing it bounced around the place and was very disappointed

Cantillon Gueze. I really wanted to like this beer, as I love this style and it's supposed to be the pinnacle. I bought it and aged it for a year as recommended. When opened, it was completely flat, and taste-wise was no better than many cheaper Gueze. £25 of liquid disappointment.

I find Tribute, Doombar and Proper Job really overrated - Tasteless brown water, nigh hopless and whatever water treatment they're using needs amended.
I'm not just saying this because I don't like them either, they're awful by every metric I can think of.

I'm from Plymouth originally so it's extra painful.

American IPAs (west coast I suppose), too bitter for me.

Had a bad experience with a NEIPA on my 40th birthday, but I think that was more to do with the 8 pints that preceded it and the run to the last train after it!

Saison - Described as a farmhouse ale, tastes more like something swept up in a farmyard to me.
Wheat beers - Described as having aromas of bananas and cloves, two aromas that sound like off flavours to me and have no place near good beer.

Saison is an interesting one in that I don’t think their are a huge number of commercial examples it certainly wasn’t dominating the taps in the pub like Sours, and Hazy IPA’s the last time I was in one. Likewise looking at the ‘what are you drinking tonight’ thread on here while their are a lot of Saison drinkers it seems to be very much dominated by home brewed ones far more so than other styles which is part of why I wouldn’t see it as over rated.

As for the popularity amongst home brewers I can only speak for myself Saison has the advantage of typically having a fairly simple grain bill and can be fermented without much regard for temperature control. If you like them (which I personally do) this makes them a great beer for home brewing.

I think Saison is a real marmite style as its quite a strong flavour which is a bit left field..

I do love a good saison and i made one with lemon drop hops which was amazing .. but it wont be a lot of peoples tastes
