Ay up,

The Mrs' Dad won't drink anything but Holsten Pils. My German mate tells me it's not even the best beer to come out of Germany, although I do think they still have the "purity law"?

Anyway, I thought it might be a challenge to brew a Holsten beater! Have I got any chance of out-Holstening Holsten?

Any recipe suggestions? Surely home brew can triumph over this commercial beer?!

Oops, sorry duck, I meant all grain. I'm thinking of something in the same style as Holsten, but probably more like it used to be before it became a big commercial outfit. I'm sure you get the gist.

oooh, hard to choose as theres so many great styles in Germany.
If you are after a HP alternative then just go for a standard pilsner. I'd be tempted to go for something with a bit more flavour, like an Oktoberfest.

I'm afraid I cant really help with recipes - i tend to avoid brewing lagers as I dont have the ability to control fermentation temperature - a must if you're brewing a lager!

Hmm, okay, the only control I'd have over temperature is "inside", "inside next to the radiator" or "outside". So I won't be able to brew lager then?

that's right, you need pretty tight control over temperature, both during fermentation & conditioning for proper lager
I would think you might get something lager like if you used the same grains & hops but used a fairly neutral ale yeast like US-05 or White Labs WLP001 California Ale Yeast...not tried lager myself, on the to do list, someone on here must've tried similar

If he won't drink anything but that awful muck, then there's not much help for him!

Try him on a can of Carling, he's clearly got no taste buds :wha:

It's far from the worst (or is that würst) lager I've had to be fair. That said, I prefer English ales every time, so what would I know :)

Heh, I was joking (mostly) but it isn't a patch on any real german lager or german beer.

You might be able to win him round with a real beer of similar style, though, so good luck!
