I think my brand new demijohn has just cracked!!!!! WTF!!!!! It has only been fermenting for a few hours and it appers to be leaking. Am far from impressed. It's all done correct I got a bung with a air lock hummmmm wilkinson might be getting a ear bashing tomorrow me thinks

Right I am gunna stick some of the trusty old gaffer tape over the crack to see if that helps. I rely don't wanna waste the batch or I'll get a new dj tomorrow

I had the bottom fall out of a demi john i got from Wilkinsons, lost the whole brew :nono:
went to Wilkinsons the next day and lifted the roof :x ,came away with several new items to
make up for the loss i suffered ..(i took pictures to prove what had happened)

When I sanatised it was at room temp with luke warm water.

Rely so someone else has had this issue! I thinks I will have to go there when I get 5 min get them to exchange it. Think is the wine kit I put in there is a good quality one so that's £15 down the sink! That's got to be worth 2 of there's lol, I don't wanna rely give the person at the store a ear bashing as it rely ain't there fault and sure they rely don't care lol. But to be honest I think they got a quality control issue :?

What do u think my chances are trensfering to a new (un cracked) jar with out spoiling the product?

Broken glass means there might be splinters in the rest of the wine.

If I were going to run it through a filter before bottling then I'd be OK with transfering but under any other circumstance I wouldn't risk it.

Good point well made I'll get a filter, it's not like I won't use it lol cheers. Can I use the same filter for beer that I do?

If you filter beer it will end up flatter than a witch's tit, unless you invest in a good system for force carbonating the beer.

Filtering causes most of the CO2 to be released and removes the yeast, so no more CO2 produced. You can prime and reintroduce yeast but it's a pita. Alternatively with a cornie you can force carbonate but that's an expensive route.

For beer, I'd advise leaving it in the FV for 14 days so its reasonably clear then throw in some finings when you barrel.

i was just thinking of heading down to get some DJs (i've never used them!) from wilkinsons tomorrow... think i'll hold off on that idea! kick up a fuss and hopefully you'll get a replacement wine kit as well

I just been and got another one to transfer the wine (to be hehe) in to and this one is fine as far as I can tell. I did doubble check it to make sure there was no signs of damage and it seems to be fine (so far) I'll take the damaged one back at the weekend. Yeah I won't settle for anything less than a new dj and a replacement kit might argue that it was a high end kit that was £15 see if I can push my luck to a £15 credit note lol. God loves a tryer lol if it looks like I am loosing I'll send in the mrs lol

just a little update on the cracked dj sage, well went backk to wilkinson and was instantly offered a full refund or exchange (good start) then i pointed out about the wine kit that was in there i was then offered a replacement kit at no charge, but as i didnt get my kit from there i went for a a 5 gal merlot that they say only takes 7 days oh and it was £6  more expensive than my spoilt kit. very good customer services and was very happy with the out come :thumb:
