"Those who ask don't get." when I asked for anything.
and
"Those who don't ask don't get." when I suggested I would have liked something that was now no longer available!
Personally I hate the following "modern" things and therefore manage to live without them:
Central Heating.
I consider it to be expensive and responsible for many of the respiratory ailments and allergies suffered by today's kids; especially when linked to fitted carpets in the same house. At my school in the 1950's there was
ONE lad who had asthma and eczema out of over 250 kids; unlike today where the ratio is
ONE in ELEVEN. Plus, if you're cold, don't turn up the CH just go and put on another sweater.
Disinfectant Sprays.
I once saw a doctor on TV advise parents that their children should "Play in dirt to build up an immunity system to bacteria." This valid piece of advice was followed by an advert where a woman was spraying a doorknob and a phone to "stop germs". A waste of money and positively detrimental to the chances of a child building up an immunity system.
Perfumed Sprays and Vapours
God only knows what harmful chemicals are being pumped into modern houses with the plethora of scents and perfumes on the market. Almost all clean and dry homes (note "homes" not "houses") won't "smell" if they are allowed to develop the characteristic smells of the occupants and their activities.
There is an advert currently on TV that tells people they have gone "Nose Blind". This is aimed at people who aren't aware that their home smells perfectly normal and therefore frightens them into buying the product. A well known tactic of big business.
i.e. First invent a problem, then frighten people into believing that the problem actually exists, then produce a solution and finally sell it; and hope that no-one notices that the problem doesn't really exist.
For any doubters amongst us "When was the last time you heard anyone mention the dreaded 'BO'?" that was a classic! "Even your best friend wouldn't tell you!" so you had better be properly scared of having it!
Washing Up Liquid Detergent
Again, a modern invention that cleans pots and pans by removing the very oil and grease that is required to stop food sticking to them when they are used; so they have to sell "non-stick" coverings to cope with using a detergent. A double waste of money.
I don't expect anyone to go back to the stone-age, but I'm pretty sure that many of today's problems are being caused by big businesses that put their profits above the wellbeing of the general public. :thumb: :thumb:
