Hello everyone can i have some help please.

So i was preparing my latest brew and being a daft wee laddie, decided to stir the wort stuck to the bottom of my fermentor with my hydrometer which subsequently snapped. I reached in and pulled it out leaving the black substance relatively untouched in the bottom of the hydrometer. A quick google search has revealed that hydrometers are usually filled with mercury or lead shot!!!! both of which are poisonous i believe. The question is... is it safe to drink bearing in mind i fished it out leaving the mercury/lead shot relatively settled in the hydrometer.

Answers on a postcard please.

ok ive re-checked my hydrometer. Its stuffed with lead shot under a dark red covering. I was thinking of just siving my brew before bottleing or passing it through some kind of filter to get round the broken glass provlem.

Thoughts?

+1 to all the above ;)

Do NOT risk it

I think your should honour its memory by brewing a better beer.

Your beer would never wish to hurt you.. so don't let it do so by your accident.

Lest we all forget hydrometers are make very cheaply..

Thanks for the advice everyone. But... I think im going to ignore it. my plan is to filter the beer through muslin prior to bottling. I'm sure that will get out any pesky broken glass. Can anyone think of a reason why this is not a good idea?

we all love beer and there are many things i would do for a good pint but riskng my health isnt on the list. lead poisoning so not in any way fun and infection due to a micro-fragment of glass lodged in your gut is even less fun. spend another £20 or so for another brew and forget this one.

I think this may qualify as a Darwin award if you go ahead! No offence intended but if I were you I would bin it now & chalk it up to experience.
remember natures pruning shears , don't be 1 of em :hmm:

Is this a p**s take because I'm having trouble visualising what you were trying to do.... if it was a big batch did you have your full arm in the fermentor or if it was such a small batch that your hydrometer could reach the bottom why are you even questioning whether to throw it away... and then you are asking people if you think it is safe to drink beer contaminated with glass/mercury/lead..... hmmm strange one really :hmm: :hmm: let us know how it turns out

Thing I'm thinking, is that they had possibly poured a kit in to the bottom of FV, and added a little warm water. At this point, they tried stirring with hydrometer. At this point, is where it broke...

Only thing I can think. Personally, I understand where OP is coming from, as does't want to loose the beer he's already created. However, I would agree with all other posters ... don't go ahead! Hopefully (in the nicest way possible), your beer will get an infection to make your mind up for you. Not worth damaging your health! If you dropped a load of glass in a curry you were cooking, would you still eat it? I know i wouldn't (even tho I'm a cheapskate who wouldn't wanna loose what I spent out money on for no good reason ;))

Hahahaha never thought of it like that i've done a lot of kits but it hasn't ever crossed my mind to stir it with a hydrometer. I suppose its the sort of thing you will only do once  bin it and chalk it down to experience. Surely most people must have chucked a brew at some time no matter how hard it is to do

+1 :thumb:

This forum has some great advice, so what is the point of asking for it, and then ignoring it :wha: :wha:

Jesus theres a lot of sadoes on here!

"Thing I'm thinking, is that they had possibly poured a kit in to the bottom of FV, and added a little warm water. At this point, they tried stirring with hydrometer. At this point, is where it broke..." - correct

I appreciate everyones concern for my health. But if you read back through my posts i dont really see where its coming from. I said i would pass the brew through muslin before bottling..... Does anyone think that broken glass can pass through music???

I said that the hydrometer was weighted with lead shot which was sealed in by some watertight substance.

Now bearing in mind what i have written above, can anyone give me any logical reason why my beer will be infected/broken glass can pass through the microscopic gaps of muslin fabric.

Look forward to the replies.

the glass used to make the hydrometer is very thin and will have splintered now likely or not one could pass through muslin lenght ways if that happened and then you injested it it may get lodged somewhere in your dijestive system maybe even go through into your main organ cavity after this an infection would start and go septic resulting in internal bleeding and possible organ failure. please throw it away its for your own good.
