OG way too high

I think I've figured out why it is still so high too.. I've got my boil loss set to 7L in beer smith as I maintain a vigorous rolling boil... Looking back at my actuals from last night, I actually lost pretty much 10L in the boil. I reckon that would probably account for it.
I'll change my equipment profile for the next one and see what happens then. I'm still only just getting used to my kit so this is good!

I was cursing a Young's thermometer a while back and nearly took it to the Home Brew Shop and demanded my money back. Fortunately it was a Sunday so I didn't make a fool of myself. Then I discovered something about the way I was using it.

Check out this thread before you write off your glass thermometers. My bet is that they are both good. If I'm wrong, I'll apologise and donate a gallon of beer to my neighbour. :)

Thanks Tony. I did check them at the correct immersion depth, however one of them has a nobble of rough glass on the bulb end of it. I suspect this is what is throwing it out and I'd take it back if I had a Wilko nearer. I think the quality and quality control is just pretty poor.

Luckily I ended up at an Ikea a few days later and they were selling a digital probe thermometer, that I've seen others rate, for about £7.

The glass ones are going in the back of the cupboard, for the day I drop the digital one in a full sink.

I bought a cheap digital thermometer on ebay which is really good. I've checked it at boiling and freezing point and it is pretty much dead on to about 0.1 of degree.

I use that one mostly, but I also use the glass one too sometimes. I got the electonic one wet once, but I just took out the batteries and left it in a warm place for a few days and it came good after about four days.

I always have two hydrometers, I break them regularly. Usually by putting them in the empty sample jar to carry them somewhere and it slips out.

I've suggested to the owner of my LHBS that he should never sell them one at a time - they are only a few quid after all.

I'm yet to break a hydrometer but I have two just in case. The reason I bought two thermometers was because I had just broken one of them.

I also bought a couple of cheap digital thermometers from Amazon but they took so long to arrive from China that I'd already got my money back for them and when they did arrive, they were so slow to stabalise on a temp they were useless. Glad I didn't pay anything for them and glad I found the Ikea one.
