I use the mini dins on my switch box, they work great, are nice and small, and they're o.k price wise too. The xlr's are a bit big for my liking and unless buying from Maplins makes em expensive, far cheaper on E-bay, but handy to look at in Maplins if unsure about size. One think I do like about the XLR's, as you touched on, are the locking tabs...no chance of them popping out :cool:
 
XLR patch cables are shielded which is a nice feature for analogue sensors.

Phone socket type connections are cheap and easy of get hold of.
