TBH I wasn't thinking of this as a competition, it just seemed like a good bit of fun and I know I'm not any kind of serious competition.....give me a few years and I might get closer ;).
Anna

I can only speak for myself but I dont think anyone else see's it as a competition either, I was only joking with my comments above. 🙂

Agreed, I think the comments are mostly tongue in cheek (although I was a bit p'd about being penalised that time :laugh8:).

I was once docked 5 or 10 points (can't remember which) by the judge of one of these competitions (can't remember who) because my beer arrived after the last day of the month, even though he didn't judge till a week later. True story.
Seems legit 😂

Right, so the judging has concluded and the scores are in. The Top 3 placings are as follows:

In joint 3rd with 37 points are @strange-steve with his German Pilsner and @xozzx with his Vienna Lager.

A surprise placing in second - @Hazelwood Brewery with his 2 week old Czech Pilsner managed to sneak ahead of 3rd place by a single point with 38

The winner, again a surprise as he hadn’t even sampled it before he sent it in, is @pilgrimhudd with his dark lager. I thought it was absolutely superb and I gave him a colossal 42 points.

Well done everyone! I’ll be in touch with your detailed feedback later in the week.

Ha! Sh*t the bed, that is a surprise, I still haven't tried it! Something to look forward too then! Thank you very much!
I don’t usually do dark beers but I absolutely loved it - incredibly well balanced and delicate. I would like the recipe.

Of course, i'm glad you enjoyed it.

So finally got some free time to brew up a bokkoe... heard of it? No me neither, or google, or any other search engine.

Anyway this is the recipe from the 'homebrew handbook' by david law.

3.5kg Pilsner
1.7kg Dark Munich
600g Dark Crystal
230g carapils
100g chocolate

30g Perle @60
28g tettnang @30
28g Hallertau & 2tsp carraway seeds @15

Cool to 14c pitch Bohemian Lager Yeast.

I had some problems on the day, I should have had an OG of around 1072 but my klarstein kept cutting out and I didn't have as much boil off as I expected, it was pitch dark when I came to decant to the FV so I didn't realise till I got the FV to the brewfridge. In the end it was 1055 or something close.

It was the easy drinking quality of it and the balance that won me over so perhaps the mishaps worked in your favour.
