I know what you mean - born in 1974 I was boundary commissioned as a foetus from Lancashire to Merseyside. I still retain a strong West Lancs accent.

Thought it was Ted Heath? He's the b*****d who nicked bits of lovely Lincolnshire and stuffed it into pretend place Humberside. *Shudder*.

You may be right, i tend to blame Thatcher for everything back then.

.

Never mind one day you can aspire to be a Honorary Yorkshire man, me I'm the real thing

Southport? Lovely part of the world, West Lancs. I grew up there, born a year after you.

We used to go to Pontins there many many years ago I remember there being a big fair in the town.
I think the Pontins is still there, and there's still a fair but I think it moved further up towards the town since I was a kid.

Edited to add: I'm not actually from Southport itself, but a very small village a few miles inland. I was last there in the summer though, Lings on Kings is a decent bet if you fancy a Chinese!

It was about 45 years ago I was last there still remember it well.

The only time I went to Southport was probably in 1958 on a day trip, the year Bolton Wanderers won the FA Cup, because there was an floral FA cup tribute if I remember correctly (Nat Lofthouse anyone?). And trips to visit the sea when the tide was out were by ex Army amphibious vehicles (alias DUKW or ducks). I assume its moved on since then?

In all the years I lived nearby I'm not sure I ever saw the sea at Southport!

Yep Southport - Ainsdale to be precise on the new housing estate right near Pontins. We always used to laugh that the barbed wire was pointing inwards to make sure none of the guests got out.

As you know (explaining for other members) Pontins is surrounded by sand dunes (well it was back then) we used to dig under the fence to escape. :laugh8:

I think the barbed wire thing was common knowledge, we laughed at that too. I spent a night there once as part of a college team building thing. It was really, really grim!

The simple wire fence seems to have gone replaced with something a lot more substantial, no one now escapes. :laugh8:
