pissed meself
I've just done that ! Brilliant Paul
Nobody like John Smiths then. :)
Reminded me that they used to say about an old Watneys brew, "Don't take the piss out of Red Barrel it needs all the flavour it can get"

Its not a direct answer to your question but my mother-in-law has an inoperable brain tumor which brings on regular epileptic fits. She is able to drink alcohol in small amounts (usually 1 glass of wine) without any adverse effects. So perhaps looking to brew a low alcohol beer would be easier?

Sorry to hear about your mother-in-law big dave :(

My dad is allowed to drink (after talking to a few docs) but has to be careful not to drink too much as he would be more prone to falling over  so low alcohol brews for my dad will be the way forward I think :thumb:

My thinking is that there must be a market out there for non-alcoholic (decent!) ale/lager. For example, if you can't drink alcohol because of a medical condition or if you are the "appointed" driver for the night but want to enjoy a decent pint.

Having thought about it a bit further, even if it was possible to create a non-alcoholic producing yeast, there's the problem of the risk of infection in the beer being seriously increased because of the lack of alcohol to protect it. I guess it would be really a question for a geneticist

 :thumb:

Hi Paul.. only just seen this post. I think I read a recipe in Dave Line's book for a shandy ... so a low alcohol, rather than no alcohol.
Bear with me!!!
From what I remember, you brew a 'normal' beer and then use the second runnings from the mash to then start another brew? can't remember the details but I'll have a look and post something to you (that is if noone replys before that).

Yes, Bishop is on to something here. In times past, I was not there ;) a "small beer" was made from the running or maybe some remashing was done :?
Think maybe the servants at big houses got it, also beer was drunk at one time because the water was so poor :)
Holiday camps in the sixties sold special weak beers, saved the furniture getting broken "Great holiday, I had sixteen pints every night"
Maybe needs reintroducing as the only drink available in City Centers. ;)
As mentioned a recipe is in the Dave Line book, I'll leave it to B.
Interesting topic this, well worthwhile for many reasons :)

If I remember correctly from a documentry I saw; when everyone was dying of Polio in London (I think sometime in the 1800's) there was a gentleman who noticed that people who drank out of the local water pump was getting polio, where as the people who stuck to beer weren't. So as an experiment he took the handle off the pump to see what would happen, shortly afterwards the polio epidemic in that area died out (I've always wondered how did people get their water if not from the pump  ).
The reason why the people who drank beer did not get polio, was down to the fact that the breweries would boil their water during the brewing process.

Was that not the cholera outbreak in the mid 1800s? I remember getting taught about that at school although they did omit the health preserving properties of beer.
