Plans for a new chippy have come up against a health board's demands for fruit and veg on the menu.
Betsi Cadwaladr health board wants the proposed takeaway in Morfa Bychan, Gwynedd, to sell a "good selection" of fruit and veg.
It wants the menu to have less fat, salt and sugar and is worried an increase in fast food outlets is "detrimental" to people's health.
It is unclear whether customers would relish the prospect of cod and broccoli on the menu.
The board said the location of the proposed new business was popular among holidaymakers, adding: "The food in these areas is targeted to meet the needs of tourists as opposed to local residents.
"This is of particular concern for local permanent residents where this food is available throughout the year and not just during holiday periods."

The more junk food was available, the board added, the more likely it was that people would get fat.
"Increased access to unhealthy food retail outlets can be associated with increased weight status in the general population and increased obesity and unhealthy eating behaviours among children residing in low-income areas," it said.
"While we appreciate this is only one extra takeaway unit, this would still be one additional takeaway than what is currently available."
Porthmadog council also chipped in with its disapproval, dubbing the scheme an "overdevelopment" as there were "too many businesses in a small area".

The council warned the plans would cause traffic and parking problems, adding there was already a chip shop in the area.
The application to change the use of the empty building was submitted in August and this is not the first time a health board has got involved in planning issues.
KFC challenged at least 43 councils, external in England last year over planning policies that restricted new hot food takeaways, winning more than half of them.
Public Health Wales, external previously estimated the cost of obesity to the NHS in Wales at £73m, which is expected to hit £465m by 2050.
The health board has been asked to comment.
 
Fish and chips wouldn't be the same without mushy peas but broccoli no way.
 
Chips and mushy peas are part of your 5 a day. At least chips have potato in them unlike those awful fries.
 
What a recipe for bankruptcy, the wonderful we know whats best for you, do they not realise when people open a tin of peas the first thing they do is put salt on them as they are so bland and tasteless, knob heads
 
I bet if it was a councillor or one of their family members wanting to open a chippy it would be approved no problem.
People eat stuff coz they want to. You go to the chippy for fish and chips and the grocery shop for vegetables. What else are they going to be told to sell...jumpers in the winter?
Too many businesses? What's the other option....looking at Wrexham...derelict empty shops.
Ok if you need some second hand stuff from a charity shop or a mobile phone.
 
Why was fish fried in batter in the first place? I suspect as a filler, the same as Yorkshire pudding, meat pie, and dumplings. In three weeks in the UK I had it three times, the first time the fish had been in the freezer for too long which put me off but the other two were fantastic though expensive. £17.50 for fish chips and mushy peas, it was a swanky pub but.

Back in ancient times fish was a low cost protein option.
But most have been an expensive luxury for many years.

You can still get reasonably priced fresh fish as long as it's mackerel or you have to opt for nondescript frozen white fish from the supermarket
 
Fish can be bought at reasonable prices at market such as Bolton or Earlestown (St. Helens) where I bought Hake, Dover Soul and Monkfish all for £14. However here in Brixham which is the largest fishing port by volume in England it is very dear.
 
Somebody needs to take these councils to court, they are restricting business growth in this country.
They have admitted that a fish and chip shop is allowed but with unrealistic restrictions.
I am fed up of bureaucrats telling me what I/we can and can not do.
Maybe it would be allowed if they promised Starmer a free Friday Chippy meal?
 
A lot of people seem to be missing the fact that it is the Health Board , not the council calling for more fruit and veg. The local council was worried about parking.
It doesn't say that the application has been rejected.
@Rodcx500z needs to stop buying tinned peas and switch to frozen or fresh. Does anyone else buy tinned peas?

the history of food in Europe is about getting calories as cheaply as possible. Pastry in pies, batter on fish. Classics like black pudding, haggis, dumplings and faggots are all just different ways to use cheap as chips grains and the 'not so premium' parts of the animal to bulk things up and st5uff in the calories. Even in Italy pasta is the cheap calorific substance with a smattering of sauce to give it some flavour, not like the lavish modern Italian dishes that are drowned in tasty sauce laces wit expensive meats and ingredients that the Italian country peasants just wouldn't have had access to. Odd that people who lived on those diets never knew Type 2 diabetes, obesity, gluten intolerance, allergies and many of the other health issues resulting from our fantastic modern ultra processed diet. At least the beer is still natural.

Proper chip shop fish and chips should always be fresh. I live not too far from the point that is furthest away from the coast you can get in the UK (granted compared to other countries its still a relatively short distance) and my local chippy still serves fish that was still swimming around within the last 24hrs.

You can offer fruit and veg but doesnt mean people will choose it. And most chips these days also sell Donner kebabs so already have a full salad bar. I've still yet to see anyone order a battered sausage with a side of salad!

Also just because its salad doesnt mean it's healthy. Think it was found that one of the unhealthiest options on Mcdonals menu was their salad because it had been washed in some not so nice chemical and the accompanying dressing has almost as many calories as a Big Mac!
