Hi, me and my hubby have started making our own wine. At the minute we have a youngs elderflower kit on the go and some pear wine. Now, my question is, how do we know how alcoholic the stuff is???
Thanks, Jules

Hello Jules,
Ideally, you want to take a specific gravity reading with a hydrometer at the beginning of the process and then when it is all done. You can take those two gravity readings and plug them into the abv calculator in the link to the top left of your screen and it will tell you the alcohol content.

If you didn't take a reading to start, someone on here should be able to say what the "typical" OG (original gravity) is for that kit based on some assumed parameters. Then, you could take one when it is finished fermenting and still get pretty close to a ballpark figure.

thanks for that, we had taken a specific gravity reading but only at the end and did wonder how that told us! Must remember to take a reading at the start from now on.

Sorry, but one reading at the end will only tell you if it's sweet, dry or somewhere in-between.

Unless someone who has used that kit can tell you what their OG reading was, it would probably be fair to guestimate around 1.080
