Hey all! Im a newbie to Home brewing and currently have my first Wherry fermenting now (7 days in). It had a very aggressive fermentation for the first few days and was going mad to the point of pushing the water out of the bubbler!!! Anyway, it has calmed down and is bubbling every couple of minutes or so at present. Anyway, the SG was 1.040 and I just checked it again (7 days in) and it is at 1.014, does this sound OK for 7 days in?
Oh I have just Dry Hopped mine with some Kent Goldings as I prefer a hoppy aroma!

Thanks in advance all

Thanks Guys!

Has anyone got any experience with dry hopping?

Was wondering about the length of time to leave them in, Im a Mahoosive fan of Shepherd Neame ales, especially Spitfire and Late red, if I can get the hoppy aroma that a Spitfire gives you I will be a very happy new brewer!!

:D

Hi

My last brew was a wherry and I dry hopped it with 20gms of Goldings after 4 days being in the fermenter and left them in there for a week. I chucked them in loose and just fished them out with a sieve after I sterilized it first I might add. That beer was superb, so good infact, I have another on the go right now. :D

When i have dry hopped ive done it in secondary for a couple of weeks and that worked for me, you could also make hop tea and add that to your fv when you mix up your kit, that way you can add flavour and aroma and you could dry hop aswell

Thanks Steve

I have just put about 30 grams in my FV, I put mine in a mutton cloth/muslin (after boiling the muslin first) in the hope of a less messy transfer to the secondary!

Did you achieve the hoppy aroma with the 20grams for a week?

Cheers

Yes Chris I did. I drank that beer to young really, but it was only my second brew and I was eager you understand :D It truly was a lovely beer though but this time I am going with 30 grms myself and I will bottle this batch as the first was kegged.

By the way - had no problems with bits of hops getting through during the syphoning part as I really did get most of it out with the sieve, and I use an auto syphon, but not sure if that is an advantage over a normal syphon or not?

Hi,

Yes, dry hopped my Wherry with 30g of cascade, tied up in a pair of ladies tights (new!!), (found it far simpler than muslin), weighted with a dozen marbles and suspended at mid-depth off of some fishing line, hopped for final 6 days of a two week secondary period, then bottled and left for 4 weeks before drinking.

A very, very nice drink indeed, enjoy  .

Oh, and from memory mine went down to 1012, so your not far of the mark if it stays at 1014.
