If you're looking for somewhere to start, I'd recommend the online version of John Palmer's "How to Brew"

I'd recommend a decent, two-can beer kit and a plastic bucket with a lid. But then, I'm old school.
There's nothing difficult about making decent beer. Making excellent beer is a bit harder and comes with experience. Copying your favourite beer requires a bit of skill and knowledge.
That's it, really. Home brewing summed up in a nutshell.
