HI All, newbie here looking for some advice on a Woodfordes Wherry kit. I am on day 4 in FV with a constant temp of about 22 apart from today which has been a warm day. I followed the instructions and it started fermenting after about 24hrs. Today the airlock was only bubbling about every 20mins or so. I cracked the FV and checked the SG - about 1012/1010 found it a bit tricky reading the hydrometer. Stupidly I didnt take a starting reading but the wort smelled good but had lots of particles floating on top - is this unfermented yeast? After replacing the lid it started bubbling more frequently, have I disturbed it and will it cause a problem? The sample tasted good though! How much longer should i leave it before putting it in a keg?

Patience is key. Plan for two weeks in the fermenter and don't touch it until a couple of days before you want to keg/bottle. If it's still bubbling it's still actively fermenting and probably doesn't need checking that early on. 1010 is a good reading, it probably started about 1040 and might not go much lower - but leave it a week before you check again. Every time you open the lid you risk infection so try not to too often - your beer is more than likely fine though. Syphon in a week with 85g sugar, leave in the warm for a week then at least a week in the cold - although you won't be able to help sampling it, it will get better the longer you leave it.

Thanks for that! I'll probably give it about 10 days total in FV, then maybe 4 in the warm which will give me a week in the cool as have friends coming 19th from Norfolk who will want to sample it!

Will post an update once in keg.

I think the advice above is sound and should guarantee results.

Myself I tend to stir the brew after 4 days taking care to do so slowly just to wake everything up again.

A point to note check the temperature when you take the SG, make sure it is 20c.

I usually leave the brew in the first FV for about 10 to 12 days then move it to my bottling FV for about 2 to 3 days.

Good luck though.
