Hello

After some great advice on this forum, i have complied my equipment and have a decent enough idea of how to go about my first biab!

I am going to do a simple recipe using my 30l boiler, having been given some good advice from a member on this forum i am hoping that i will end up with 21 litres-ish after i have sparged, boiled etc.

I could really do with some help on a basic recipe, times, amount of grain and hops etc. I have purchased 6 kg of maris otter and 100g of cascade and 100g of citra.

Does anyone have any ideas on a basic recipe using some of the grains and hops that i already have?

Thanks

I'm in the same boat as you Will I bought 6kg's of marris and 200grams of Nelson sauvin. Thinking I could do a smash. Have a play with brewers friend or just Google some tried n tested recipes. Search my thread Nelson marris smash

What ABV are you looking for and how hoppy(/ citrusy with those hops) do you like? You could make a lovely cascade smash with the Maris otter. Cascade is not as in your face as the citra but if you like that kind of thing then you could add it as a late hop or even dry hop.

4-5%, to be honest i am not really that fussed. Yep, I thought about just using maris otter and cascade. Or just using a bit of citra late on. Just a bit confused on times, amounts etc.

Those are both great hops. You could try something along these lines, but get some other opinions on this recipe and see what they think.

This will make a nice hoppy American Pale with a bitterness of about 50 IBU at about 5% abv. It will be quite pale

5kg of Marris Otter with a 60 minute mash at 66C

25g Citra @60

30g Citra @10
30g Cascade @10

At flame out, cool to 70C and add 45g of EACH of your citra and cascade and let them steep for half an hour at about that temperature. Then cool to pitching temperature and ferment with maybe US05 American Ale Yeast.

Personally, I would drop in a wirfloc tablet at about 40 minutes to help coagulate the proteins and drop them out.

If it is your first boil, look out for the wort rising up and spilling over at teh beginning of the boil and when you drop in your wirfloc or other seaweed type tablet at 40 minutes. This can be a surprise if you aren't expecting it. You can keep it down by stirring the top of the foam vigorously with a big spoon.

Thanks for that. I will order some wirfloc. I have brupaks anti-foam, hopefully that should keep my boil under control.

I was thinking maybe taking it a bit lighter with the citra as i have heard that it can be quite over powering? But thats a fantastic guide in terms of timings and weights of ingredients.

Have you seen this website for checking what is likely to come out will?

Enjoy your experiments. There are stacks of craft brewed APAs with that kind of hop profile. If they are not your thing, then certainly lighten up on the late hops. For me they make a good brew into the kind of beer I think the dead Vikings drink all day in Valhalla! :)

Thanks for that, really helpful.

I have had a play with it and decided to keep everything super simple.

5Kg of Maris Otter with a 60min mash at 66C

30g Cascade @60 mins

30g Cascade @20 mins

30g Cascade @5 mins

Using wirfloc after 40mins and anti-boil to try and keep everything under control!

Does this look ok? any opinions?

When I did my SMaSH, I played about with the Brewers Friend app until I had something that matched the style for a pale ale.
