Hi peeps,

Not posted here in yonks but do lurk occasionally.
One question that might seem stupid to some, but it keeps popping into my head:-
How do you describe/name your brews ??

I’m an avid cook, bbq/smoker, beer and wine brewer.
I often get, What’s it called? My response is erm, dunno as it just came to me as I decided I wanted to cook, brew it.

I just do it from my own mind.

I wouldn’t have a clue about style and technique or what not, I just do it.

Rarely do the same thing twice as that’s what keeps things interesting to me and the people who consume it.

I see your pics and things with descript names and I’m clueless as to what you mean.
Obviously I know cider from mead from wine, wines easy, I just name the flavour.

I just make stuff that fills you up or gets you drunk.

With regard to beer, pick grains throw them in, I dunno what you call it :)

Well, most people tend to follow recipes in the beginning, and find their way from that point onward. I started with a few kits, went to extract, then allgrain. I can't cool, so I focus on ales and the like.

And I number them. Now on #30, tomorrow brewing #31.

I try and think up how it's going to be drunk and in what company and try to come up with a descriptive name that suits the beer style.

A lager I did for a BBQ with the guys was called "*************"
A golden ale for a housewarming was "friend request"
My partial extract brew that went a bit dark due to overheating the lme was "caramel calamity"
I've had Frankensteins funk for a TC at Halloween, nobby's mutts, bruised balls

Blah blah

Well I wouldn’t drink a beer called ************* LoL LoL

Is the OP asking how we name our beers or how we know what style we are brewing?

The former comes from my music collection, I only name beers that are my own creation. I did a California Common called “Common People” (Pulp) and it started the trend. Since then I’ve done “Mighty Mighty Bosstone” NEIPA (after the ska band of the same name), “Fools Gold” golden ale (Stone Roses), “Hefewheat Champion of the World” Hefeweizen (Reverand and the Makers), and “Drunken Lazy *******” Irish Stout (The Mahones), amongst others.

Yeah Mick more style than names, although I approve of your names :) more of a rob zombie/ Motörhead fan myself.

As for *************, I’m up for it :)
Stick the lager though.. yuck ;)

No idea about style labels, just good beer with the very very rare dodgy brew, even then they serve as good bbq marinade.

My tastes are pretty eclectic. Country right through to extreme metal. I saw Motörhead supported by Anthrax back in 2003 when I was 18 or 19.

Hard rock, American punk, indie-rock and alt-country are my preferences though.

Coming up with beer names is great fun. My last beer and first lager was called Want any pils mate? A nod to my misspent youth clubbing and going to festivals.

Other recent beers have included Douche Canoe Ale after the best insult I'd heard in a long time. Infinite Spunky Cage in tribute to the excellent R4 science panel show Infinite Monkey Cage and Jeremy Corbeeryn was a recent red ale.

I'm planning a bitter this weekend called Rumpleforeskin.

That’s great! I love a bit of wordplay!

Mick we could be kindred spirits, if it sounds good, it’s good dagnamit Anthrax melted my brain during the joey belladonna era

I don't think much of the current fad for giving beers silly names that tell you nothing about the beer. I much preferred it when a beer label just told you the name of the brewer and the style of beer.

As for knowing the style you've created it's fairly straightforward.

If it looks like p**s and tastes ok it's a pale ale
If it looks like p**s and is way too hoppy it's an IPA
If it looks like p**s and it tastes like p**s it's a lager
If it's brown and tastes like a pale ale it's a bitter
If it's black and it tastes like p**s it's a porter
If it's black and tastes ok it's a stout
If it's black and it's way too hoppy it's a black IPA
If it's brown and tastes like old socks it's a brown ale
If some idiots put spices in it so it tastes like Christmas pudding it's a Festive ale
If some idiots put vanilla in it it's an abomination unto the Lord...

Being creative is not bound to rules, so sometimes I can come up with something thought through, and sometimes I do not have inspiration.

My first beer was a Leffe clone, and I called it "Blinde Hendrik" (Blind Henry), after the count which gave the abbey of Leffe its existence. As label I use the citadel of Namur.

I brewed a Duvel clone, which I called "Highway to Hell", and put Angus (with the horns) on the label.

I also brewed a strong (Scotch) ale, which I called "Crivens!", in remembrance of Terry Pratchett.

In one of my lesser creative moments I called a dubbel-like beer "8° Brown" due to lack of inspiration. Those degrees are Belgian degrees. 8° is an original gravity of 1.080.

I'm useless at naming things, although I came up with hooligun juice for my 6.5% apa for the World Cup.
Same here
Sometimes I'll just abbreviate it with hops used and use colour stickers for the top of the lids
I think it only really matters to people who give or sell beer and that's definately not me
