I tried a bottle of Nøgne Ø IPA last night and liked it so much I'm going to have to brew some  Not sure if their beers are available in the UK but they are worth tracking down.

Anyway, they have given this recipe for a home brew version:
77% pale ale malt
10% wheat malt
8% caramalt
5% munich malt

Mash at 66 °C. OG of 1,070

Add Chinook for 60 IBU at the beginning of the boil (90 mins)
Cascade 2 g/litre 30 mins
Cascade 2 g/litre 15 mins
Cascade 2 g/litre 5 mins
Cascade 2 g/litre 1 mins
Cascade 2 g/litre 0 mins

Ferment with Whitelabs WLP007 at 20 °C

After primary dry-hop with 1,5 g/litre Cascade

I'll use US-05 instead of the whitelabs.

Looks like a fantastic beer and a great recipe. Looks like it's available all over the world except here :(
Never heard of hvete malt!
Anything 'special' about Grimstad water?

Keep us updated!

Forgot to translate that bit! Hvetemalt is just wheat malt, updated now.
I think the "Grimstad water" bit is mainly marketing but I'll see if I can find a profile.

Looks like something I would like

Just run some figures through the forum calc and if the above recipe means 2g of cascade per litre of final brew length then a 23 litre brew would be around 104IBU

recipeview.php?recipe_id=552

so thats 52grams of chinook @ 12.7%aa to take it to 60IBU and 230grams of cascade @ 7.6%aa (worked out on my last brew with these hops) which takes it to 104IBU

OG 1070 and FG 1017 which i would bet both my arms would finish at least ten points lower at this mash temp and grain bill and using US-O5 could result in a brew of around 8.5 %

   sounds great

its on the to brew list very near the top :thumb:

Plus a trip to Norway

But then I hear its a very exspensive country :( How much for a beer in the pub Rabbie? Or for a bottle of this IPA?

Right, all set for tomorrow...
I've had to adjust the recipe a touch, aiming for 15 litres (struggling for empty bottles just now :) ) at 1.065:

77% pale ale malt
10% wheat malt
8% caramalt
5% munich malt

35g Chinook 60 mins
15g Centennial 30 mins
15g Centennial 15 mins
15g Centennial 5 mins
15g Centennial steeped
10g Centennial dry hop

Mashed at 66C, fermented with US-05 at 18C

The real version costs about £6 a bottle (500ml) in the equivalent of the off-licence, and about £10 in the pub
This is one of the better pubs in town http://www.haandverkerstuene.no/bilder/olmeny.pdf
And yes, there is a beer for £60 on there!

And I thought Iceland was bad at £7.50 for two halves of lager. That was on our honeymoon, 20 years ago. We kept the glasses. A bottle of wine would have meant a 2nd mortgage.

Best of luck with the brew rabbie

Sweet baby jesus... Finland is expensive but it's no wonder that when I was still living in the north of Finland I saw lots of Norwegians in the summertime, there for cheap holidays.

Good luck for the brew!

I'm going to have a go at this recipe for my second brew as soon as my first is ready to bottle (unless I give into temptation and buy a second fermenter before then!). A couple of questions, if anyone can help;

- the version of this recipe under the 'recipes' section of this website has seperate entries for 46 grams of hops at 30 mins under both bittering and aroma hops. presumably this is just because it has both functions? I'm not supposed to put in 92 grams at 30 mins?

- the Nogne website says that this beer is hopped with Simcoe as well as Chinook and Cascade. if you were going to use some Simcoe in this recipe, any thoughts on when/how much you'd use (presumably instead of some of the cascade?)

thanks

This is a really good brew. I hope yours turns out somewhere close.

Beers of Europe in Setch have it in stock HERE. I bought some from their shop this summer when I went on holiday in Norfolk - it went down a treat..

First time checking in for way too long, busy with new job and hew house...
This was a good brew, tasted it with the real thing and it wasn't quite there in terms of aroma, but still really happy with it. Will have to try and make time to get something on the go again, this would be a good candidate.

Cornelius on Leith Walk have had a good Nogne Ø selection the last times I was there (over a year ago I admit) so worth a try if you're in Edinburgh.
