I’m not very new but I’ve recently migrated to all grain with a brewzilla.
I started my first brew with an excellent Old Thumper clone from BrewBros. As a novice and within an hour of starting I was on the phone to Brew Bros. Andrew picked up and was a great help with my dumb question. Actually their instructions are idiot proof but I still had a question.
Fast forward a month and the beer tastes exactly like Ringwoods Old Thumper.
Next up was a few recipes from Greg Hughes’s book which I tweaked a bit.
All very drinkable.
Now the interesting brew. Pilsner. As it was early December and temperatures were low I ventured into the unknown. Man I could not get my head around the Mangrove Jack Bavarian M76 yeast brewing at a crazy 8-14 degrees. I am very much used to 20-24. Then conditioning by the garage door at 6-10 degrees. I know what you’re thinking but I don’t have space for a fridge.
Anyway after 3 weeks in a keg it was very nice but these Pilsners need to be very very fizzy so I put the lot in bottles with a teaspoon of sugar.
2 weeks on it’s pretty perfect. Serve very cold and it’s still carbonated to the last mouthful.
So my new venture into all grain has been a real education. Kit beers are very nice but if your thinking about going all grain take the leap because in the last year I have learnt so much more about brewing. I’ve created a couple of Citra hopped beers akin to Punk, but the Greg Hughes book allows me to brew beers to my unique preference.
Thought I’d share that with you all.
Hoppy new year guys.
