I have gathered about 50 or so bottles over the last few months. Soaked them in hot water to remove labels. I've noticed that there is some mould at the base of of some of the Old a Golden Hen bottles. Any tips on how best to get these cleaned before sanitising and bottling. I have a couple of weeks before my brew is ready. Bought a baby bottle cleaner but it's not long enough to reach the base. :drink:

I always put my glass bottles in the dishwasher after drinking from them and again before bottling. otherwise give them a good soak in oxy action with hot water, rinse them out them soak them in some star san cleaner as its no rinse.

Put them in a large container with warm water and Oxi. Leave to soak over night then give them a good shake and drain the mould should come out and be clean ready for sanatising. Also gets rid of all the labels.

I use a 60l plastic chutney barrels or a dustbin would do. :thumb:

I am so impressed with the speed of your responses. This is a great forum. Thank you.

I make a new cleaner every time I clean my bottles by cutting an inch X two inch square piece of washing up sponge, pushing a bamboo kebab sick through the middle and tying it on with a bit of cotton. I use this to wipe the inside of the bottles clean before sterilizing them.

Some great information here!

Here's me putting my bottles in hot water for 10 minutes and then vigorously scrubbing with a scourer to get the stubborn labels off!

Does the oxi cleaning method pull off even the glue of stubborn labels?

Caustic soda makes wonders with any mould. 3% hot solution clears everything.

I use a tap connected bottle blaster which gets rid of any mould. It usually washes right out. Then sanitise as usual. To prevent this, store your bottles upside down and dry if possible. Even a sanitised bottle will grow mold if there is any water left in the bottom.
